They are teenagers now. Maybe a part-time job down at the Hardware store will teach some contract responsibility.

Exactly the problem. We are spending 3.4 Million on a 35 year old goaltender for the next 3 years who will be an average(if were lucky) or likely a below average starter in this league.

Im not saying Fletch could do much else I'm just saying I'm not thrilled with the idea of having Backstrom as our guy trying to steal us a playoff series in the next 3 playoffs.

You just claimed that he's below top-20, we said that he is in top-20 and now you're saying that we proved your point?

What.

With the reduced work load and hopefully healthy Hards, it'll be a damn good tandem

The title should be fixed. As far as I know, it was three years, 10.25 million. 3.42 cap hit, not 3.24.

Sorry, I just want to be that guy.

I'm just glad Backstrom took a discount and we didn't overpay for another goalie. Best-case scenario, IMO.

2 Problems with the contract that both depend on maybe's to be problems.

1: Health, he has worn down the last few years, it could be nothing the next few but you don't know, as of now its risk #1, can he have the durability of a number 1.

2: 35+ deal, we all know what this means.

Again it all depends on how it turns out, the term is a bit scary, the price is ok but those risks are going to be interesting to watch as they play out.

Still tho, we have two guys in the NHL to push one another, and two guys in AHL to push one another.

Perfect deal. Gives us plenty of time to groom his replacement, I look for a gradual transition over the term of the contract.

I'm ok with the deal. It's not great, but not bad either. I wish it was two years instead of three, but it's fine.

I think it's a pretty good deal overall, especially considering the starter goalie market right now.

I'm hoping starting next year Keumper will begin his transition, then in the third year Backs will mostly be the backup.

I'm not 100% sure, but if somebody signs a contract after the age of 35, the contract stays on the books for the duration. Even if the player retires. So it doesn't matter if Backstrom plays out his three years(until he's 38) or retires halfway into this season, we're stuck with his contract and the cap hit until it expires. Or trade him away I suppose.

If a player is under 35 and retires, the contract simply disappears from the salary cap.

I could be wrong, but I believe this is correct.

I think that the term on this deal is a little scary because of the 35+ rule, but it's something that we had to get done. There wasn't a whole lot of other options out there that would be available at this cap hit.

So, at least we have that set for the next couple of years to allow Kuemper/Gustafsson groom down in the AHL.

From what I can tell the 35+ rule is still on the books but with only a 3-year contract I don't think it's a huge risk.

Pretty much.

As for Backstrom wearing down the last few years, that's absolutely correct. But look at his usage up to that (breaking) point. The Wild have ridden him pretty hard during his tenure so I would assume the hope would be to be able to balance the load moving forward.

How Yeo handled the goaltending situation in this abbreviated year was about as poor as you could draw up.

Yeah. I'd like to see him maybe get 45-50 starts this year, closer to 40 starts next year, and hopefully we'll only need him for 20-30 starts the last year.

Solid deal and a nice bargain. Good to see the Wild not getting tied up in the massive goalie deals that have plagued other teams. It has its risks but I think they're smaller risks than any of GMCF's other options. Would have paid out the ass on the trade market, signing a UFA would've put them over the cap without even touching the FAs, and as much as I liked the original plan of Hards taking over this year, it just doesn't make sense anymore.

Given how Harding looked in the playoffs, and the fact that he hopefully won't need to change his medicinal regimen again, I'm somewhat optimistic that he can ease the load on Backstrom this year and counter the effects of the wear. Plus Backs will never be playing in that condensed of a schedule again.

What are the chances we would sign Bryzgalov? I notice the flyers bought him out, and he's one of my favorite goaltenders, or since we resigned backs he's going to stick around with Harding for a little longer?
