So.....we traded for an ECHL defenseman?

Edit - never mind, he was finally in the AHL last year. I guess it's better than a goon we weren't ever going to use.

He's been a pretty regular AHL player for the last couple of years according to eliteprospects

Grant is a pretty good offensive defenseman in the AHL. He'll never be a NHLer because he's utterly useless in his own end, but I'd still rather have him than Zolnerczyk.

Yeah, I was going off NHL.com. 14 AHL games in '09-10 and 4 in '10-11 before getting 61 in '11-12 they don't have up last year yet. Oops

the timing of this trade is pretty funny because lately there have been some real hardcore discussions about Grant and this is a guy that never gets talked about. i figured i'd gather it together for you guys so you don't have to rummage through a bunch of WBS threads.

Grant also brings some experience and a willingness to protect his teammates (though he's not a good fighter). He also wouldn't cost a veteran roster spot yet. But yeah he's not actually good at defending.

He has a bit of that Kennedy tunnel vision too, because he'll have a teammate screening the goalie in a good spot for a redirect or a rebound and he'll rifle this full speed, head high slap shot. He's nailed a few of his teammates with it, I think it was Tangradi who he hit in the head with one this year.

I think there's a realistic chance the team lets Grant move on to open up a spot. He was healthy scratched at times during the playoffs.

But he could move on to a different team with less defensive depth and make a name for himself in the NHL.

Grant is a 3rd-pairng AHL guy that was getting scratched in the playoffs.

Sounds like the description I'd expect for Vatanen's replacement.

So you guys think Vatanen is getting traded?

EDIT: Or perhaps a promotion

That is what I was saying, though I suppose that there's an outside chance of there being a trade.

A defenseman too poor at defense for Pittsburgh? That's pretty bottom-of-the-barrel.

I find it amusing they compare him to Lovejoy. You guys are probably right in that he would be slated to fill Vatanen's AHL spot, but it would be amusing (terrifying) if he's being acquired in anticipation of losing Lovejoy to UFA.

Not a bad deal. Just for Norfolk. Both are RFAs, so we don't even have to sign him. Better than not getting anything for Z though

Good Trade From Norfolk's View

Good trade for the Admirals. Smaby's gone, Hendry and Guenin are not guaranteed to be back and I agree that Vatanen will start next season in Anaheim. Only Matt Clark and Stefan Warg have multi year experience in the pros.

So signing veterans who can help Norfolk while provoking yawns in Anaheim are critical to Norfolk. We will be very young next season and you need vets to mentor those young guys.

And hopefully this is not the last of the acquisitions either by trade or by free agent signing.

The Admirals need players too. And Murph doesn't make these deals, McNab or Ferguson does.

If Grant reaches his upside he probably tops out as a grittier version of Kurtis Foster. Huge shot, willing to mix it up, not much else.

Hey, Bob told you he wouldn't be returning the same team. You're surprised at these blockbuster moves?

That's what I thought too.

Zolnierczyk was a bit redundant here - I doubt he was going to get a shot in the NHL and there are better options up front in the AHL for us.

I`m kind of scared of the age of Norfolks defense. We should at least get Guenin back.

Although it doesn't really mean a whole lot as far as the big club goes, the trend Murray has set in place worries me for Norfolk a bit.

Gagne
Cuminsky
Grant

All offensive puck moving dmen, all average at best defensively. Ducks have O'Brein who is a rookie coming in, and my guess is they will bring back Clark. However neither can be considered great defensively at this point. Warg is a wildcard at this point.

Certainly leaves a lot of questions on the defensive side of things for Norfolk going forward.

Haven't even considered that; good point. I hope they bring a stay at home defenseman in. Bob Murray probably is on the case, but you have to find someone willing to trade.
