I completely forgot, was a term limit set for contracts with the new CBA?

8 years for re-signing your own players, 7 years for signing UFAs.

Lets try to keep the hypothetical lineups in the Speculation/Offseason thread. This thread is reserved for CBA/Cap news and faq.

Craig Custance spoke to an NHL AGM about compliance buyouts. Over/under on the number of buyouts this summer. That exec said 15. Fewer next summer. I know Custance has a relationship with Gorton. Maybe that AGM is Gorton.

15 seems high. It's hard to gauge who they can be talking about.

Briere
Richards
Kaberle
Leino
Dipietro
Luongo
Pronger

Questionable:
Ballard?
Hossa?
Lecavalier?
Ohlund?
Ruutu?
Richards?
Carter?
Jones?
Franzen - signed until 40?
Zetterberg - signed until 40?
Horcoff?
Erhoff - signed until 38?
Weber - signed until 40?
Jovanovski?
Wisniewski?
Goligoski?
Grabovski?
Liles?
Komisarek?
Kovalchuk - signed until 42?

No idea who from that group gets amnestied

There's a solid compliance buyout candidate on nearly every team, and yet as the window gets closer to opening, just how many compliance buyouts we'll see this summer doesn't get any clearer.

One NHL assistant GM was asked to set the over/under on how many compliance buyouts we'll see this year. He put the number at 15. And he expects that number to drop next summer.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/blog/...ting-offseason

Richards
Komisarek
Briere
Olesz
Kaberle
Leino
Stajan?
Samuelsson/Bertuzzi
Horcoff
Heatley
Bryzgalov
Havlat
Ballard
Booth

That's 14

Some players are health related issues which might prevent the buyout from being completed.

Pronger is injured, he can't be bought out.

I don't think Ohlund can be bought out either. His knee is a mess.

And the Bolts boards seem to think that Vinny L will NOT be amnestied.

The Amnesty market is more interesting than the FA one IMO. If 15 high salary players get bought out - adding those to the FA pool will make it more interesting. And also reduce the price on the free agent market quite a bit. Which Is most likely the script from the league all along as they foresaw this when the cap number going down was decided upon and the limited amount of total remaining space which would be left for the 200 odd players now up for new contracts. Smart move by the league short term.
I am sure we will see at least one roster pickup here for the Rangers especially I Richards is bought out. And there is really no alternative left now other than buying him out due to the recapture paragraph in the new CBA. I expect 2 new bigger names on the team next year, plus a trade or two. Maybe a lefty defenseman plus a bottom 6 player ( or two) is sent packing. Will surely be interesting to follow. Does the brass think we can be over th top with a few moves now or do they move fwd in a longer perspective. My money is on a shorter term answer ( not necessarily what I vouch for) as Sathers window is getting smaller. Both for him and Hank.

If we dump Brad and Clowe, we'll have over $18 in free cap space after re-signing our RFAs and adding a couple of minor players (#7D, #13F).

Next year, we'll need to give an additional $2 to Cally, $2.5 to Girardi, $.5 to MDZ, $1 to Moore, and $1 to Lundqvist. That's $7.

On the other hand, Boyle, Pyatt and Biron ($4.55) will be replaced by cheap rookies costing around $2 between the three of them, saving us around $2.5. MCI will probably replace Stralman, saving a few hundred thousand. In all, we'll still have ~$15 left, and that's not counting that the cap will very likely be hire in 2014-15.

If there's someone good out there, we can definitely afford him.

I would love to get Vinny for a cheaper deal, but I don't think it will happen. He is valuble for Stamkos and Yzerman are used to playing for a team that keeps there vets in place longer than anyone else...

I would rather let Callahan walk than pay him $6M/year, especially on a longer deal. It'll be Drury 2.0 except Callahan never was as good as Drury at his best. So even worse than Drury.

Maybe $5.5M for at most 2 years, no long cushy deal that will come back and bite us in the ass a lot sooner than expected. He will be 29 next summer, and I don't expect him putting up 30g in his 30's.

Stepan is however a player we perhaps should consider signing to a long deal. He is (June 18th) 23, and signing him for 8 years at ~5M may not be a bad idea. We have cap space now so a bridge deal may not do us a lot of good, give up some money now to get his future cap hit down. He'll be 30 when that expires.

looking at the cap problems other team are in, I feel really good with the Rangers situation here. without buying out Richards, there is a little over 14mil of cap space to resign Hagelin, Stepan, Zucc, McD, which is completely doable, but then if Richards is bought out the space becomes over 20 mil. It will be interesting to see what happens, but I like the spot the Rangers are in. Better than philly and boston, better than pitts too

I'm keeping track of our off-season cap on a spreadsheet, so since some of you probably do the same, I'm wondering if my off-season cap space (after the 10% off-season increase) is correct.

I have $15,471,995.

Unless Hossa loses a leg in a shark accident next year, he will never get bought out.

Vinny L is sort of the biggest name that seems possible. The other guys have maybe 2-3 good years left at best.

Can't get bought out if you're injured.

Edit: original thoughts are overrated anyways.

Especially Philly. Those Bryzgalov and Pronger contracts are killing them. Now Streit too.

Compliance buyout period begins tomorrow night at 11PM EST (48 hours after the SC is awarded). In some instances like Kaberle, players have already been notified that they will be bought out. I'm sure we will hear a lot of rumors today and tomorrow.

“We’re going to add another billion dollars in gross revenue in the very near future,” Wirtz said while with his team in Boston. “The CBA is long-term [10 years, with opt-outs for the league and players after eight], and now the focus is on growth. I’m extremely happy about the future of the NHL.”

Wirtz isn’t alone in having that billion-dollar vision in this first year under the new collective-bargaining agreement. According to sources at the team and league levels, NHL executives informed the league’s audit and finance committee at a meeting on June 10 that the league projects bringing in an additional $1 billion of cumulative revenue over the next three seasons.
http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/J...-notebook.aspx

Revenues were $3.3B in 11-12. Another billion by the end of 15-16. $4.3B. 50%. Assuming $95M in benefits. Subtract $95M. Divide by 30. Add 5%. Add 15%. Its 15% and not $8M anymore. Upper limit of $82,713,750 for 16-17. CBC contract expires after 13-14. The new money begins in 14-15 which will be counted for the 15-16 cap.

I don't think they mean they expect it to be 4.3 in 15-16. They said an additional 1 billion in cumulative revenue over the next 3 seasons.

Same. And 5% YoY growth in HRR over the next three seasons would account for slightly over $1B in cumulative new revenue. This forecast goes back to CBA negotiations last winter.
