Coburn = Eberle (at best imo)

Mez for moving up 4 slots in the first round of a premium draft? That's insane. That's not even the cap space considered.

Honestly, I expect Mez to be moved at or before the draft for a 3rd or 4th rounder, more likely the later.

If the Coburn/Mez/11 for 7 and Eberle goes down, this would be how I go through with the rest of the offseason. Nurse plays another year in Juniors while Timonen ends his career. That leaves $4 mil+ available in cap space for the following season to re-sign Schenn/Couturier/Giroux and probably Read too (plus Timonen coming off the books, plus an increase in cap space). Re-sign gagne for $2.5 million. Only other move I would make is offer sheet Shattenkirk, which I know won't really happen. So in conclusion, my fantasy land NHL13 roster for next year would look like this:

CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER
My Custom Lineup
FORWARDS
Jordan Eberle ($6.000m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.750m) / Sean Couturier ($1.375m) / Brayden Schenn ($3.110m)
Matt Read ($0.900m) / Scott Laughton ($1.107m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
Simon Gagne ($2.500m) / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m) / Zac Rinaldo ($0.750m)
Jay Rosehill ($0.675m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Luke Schenn ($3.600m) / Kimmo Timonen ($6.000m)
Kevin Shattenkirk ($4.827m) / Mark Streit ($5.250m)
Erik Gustafsson ($1.100m) / Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m)
Bruno Gervais ($0.825m) /

That wasn't a rumor I read, someone just proposed it to me.

I'd absolutely do that deal to get Ebs. Not a chance from Edmonton though. The move up in picks wouldn't even concern me.

Why would you not take that deal?

I dunno. I value Coburn a lot more than most people I guess. Eberle would be nice to have and moving up would be great, but I guess I value the fact that Coburn eats a lot of minutes and outside of last year he's been very reliable. Guess I'm just not that high on Eberle.

Beause our defense without Coburn, Mezaros and maybe Grossmann if he's still injured could be a complete disaster.

That would be an extremely short-sighted view of the trade imo. To me, it's always better to win a deal from the talent perspective (and cap perspective in this case), than to think only about next season's roster.

We'd be trading potential weakness next season (assuming 0 other deals) for greater opportunity over the next 5 imho.

No way would Edmonton ever do that. Eberle could be packaged for a legit #1 dman

I don't see how that would kill the team, since Meszaros is likely to be given away anyway. Coburn and the 11th for Eberle and the 7th value wise is a steal for the Flyers. It's not like Coburn was a particularly strong defender last year, they seemed to play better without him plus at 7 you pretty much guarantee yourself a choice of the defense man not named Seth Jones, or one of the forwards falling.

When those 3 went down, the team actually allowed less goals than when they were in the lineup.

I wasn't aware you spoke Russian. Well, since Bryzgalov is gone I had to use the google translate feature to figure out what you were saying...

And I have to say that I completely agree with you. When we had a goaltender who wasn't letting in softies, it didn't matter that our net was getting shelled because of the piling defensive injuries. I agree completely that it was exactly the same system played by lesser defensive players playing hard to earn a roster spot in the upcoming years in conjunction with credible level goaltending that helped us pull above the .500 mark. Further more, I also completely agree with you that blaming Laviolette's system, when it was not altered in any real significant way, is ridiculous.

Man, I'm glad google has a translate feature. That could've gotten ugly.

That had more to do with Mason playing out his mind than the actual defense in front of him. He had multiple nights where he faced 40+ shots during that stretch.

I don't know how people can say our defense was better during that time. Mason was tested hard and played very well. In that same stretch, Bryz kept sucking. It was Mason stealing games.

Bryz actually didn't play that bad during that stretch after he got pulled from the Winnipeg game. He didn't face as many shots a night as Mason though.

Your team's GA/G stat can't be pinned directly on the D or the G. The D contributes directly to chances/shots allowed, and the G contributes directly to SV%. The combination of those things gets you to GAA.

Just checked the 3 mock drafts on NHL's draft section. One has us taking Ristolainen, another has us taking Monahan, and the last one has us taking Fucale. One forward, one defenseman, and one goalie.
