Horton or Clarkson instead of Ryan?

Would anyone rather see the flyers go for one of these guys instead of trading for ryan? They wouldn't have to give up anything to get them and who knows use the the 11th overall to draft and develop a defenseman.

I think Clarkson could work really well on this team but I don't see him as being an instead of Ryan piece. Ideally Clarkson is banging bodies on the 3rd line

I'd have no problem with either of those guys for the right price and just wait for Ryan to become a FA.

I think I would like Stalberg instead. Hortons concussion history would worry me

I'd take Clarkson if the contract was modest enough that he could live up to it with some 20/20 type seasons, not expecting 1st line production.

Would only take a flier on Horton if his market collapses. Has to be a small contract.

Well let's say the Flyers move back with the 11th and move Read+41 and end up with 3 1st round picks. Awesome right?

Now you need to fill three holes on the wing...Raffl potentially fills one...

Hartnell - Giroux - Voracek
Stalberg - Schenn - Simmonds
Clarkson - Couturier - Raffl
Rinaldo - Laughton - Talbot
Rosehill
(McGinn, Akeson, Flanagan)

Switch Clarkson and Stalberg around, sub McGinn for Raffl and I'm on board

No to Horton (concussion issues and money are concerns), maybe to Clarkson (money is a concern).

I like Stalberg as a cheaper option.

I rather Homer not go all out with free agent signings this summer. We already have Streit and need some space for the upcoming year. I would sign a goalie & a forward and call it a summer.

Stalberg and Lombardi for me, hopefully Luongo if he's bought out...otherwise Emery for cheap.

CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER
My Custom Lineup
FORWARDS
Scott Hartnell ($4.750m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Viktor Stalberg ($2.000m) / Brayden Schenn ($3.110m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
Jason Akeson ($0.900m) / Sean Couturier ($1.375m) / Matt Read ($0.900m)
Zac Rinaldo ($0.750m) / Scott Laughton ($1.107m) / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m)
Tye McGinn ($0.775m) / Matthew Lombardi ($1.000m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($6.000m) / Luke Schenn ($3.600m)
Mark Streit ($5.250m) / Braydon Coburn ($4.500m)
Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m) / Erik Gustafsson ($1.501m)
Bruno Gervais ($0.825m) /
Chris Pronger ($4.941m) /
GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($3.467m—35.0%)
Steve Mason ($1.500m)
OTHER
Buyout: Oskars Bartulis ($0.100m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $65,758,189; BONUSES: $2,960,000
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $1,501,811

That's with 35% of Luongo's contract retained by VAN, nothing offical...I couldn't buy him out for another team and add him as a Flyer, I'd expect him to get somewhere around $4-5m/y if he hits FA.

Lombardi I'd give a shot as a training camp invite if no one else grabs him. Him or Dominic Moore if he still wants to play hockey. If they don't work out, or if Laughton isn't ready, or if Akeson slips...they can step in.

Potential PPs:

Hartnell - Giroux - Voracek
Timonen - Gustafsson

Couturier - Schenn - Simmonds
Streit - Read

Potential PKs:

Couturier/Read
Talbot/Lombardi(/Moore)
Laughton/Giroux

My vote is for Filppula C/LW, we're already stacked on the right side (Voracek,Simmonds and Read), would be good for B.Schenn-Simmonds combo. Filppula can provide good secondary scoring and win faceoffs. Let Filppula take the defensive zone draws/draws just outside the defensive zone and let Brayden take everything else because I don't want to totally stunt Brayden's growth in the faceoff dot. Don't know what he's looking for but I'd off 4-years @ 4 to 4.5 mil AAV maybe 5 years.

Yeah, Stalberg for me too. Big body, love his speed. 43 points last year with no PP time.

43 points? Is that pro-rated or the year before? I'm seeing 23 points in 47 games.

No one that requires a long term commitment. Time to find some third line high reward types

I can't see Stalberg taking less than 3 years @ 3 mil AAV, even that might be a little light. Can't blame him for cashing out after the success he's had with the Hawks.

Wow!! Forget Filppula. Stalberg for me too.

The club will also explore the option of trading Valtteri Filppula‘s negotiating rights should the two sides fail to reach an agreement on a new deal.

Filppula, 29, is in the final year of a five-year, $15 million deal and is rumored to be seeking a new long-term contract worth more than $5 million annually.
Detroit is reportedly not willing to commit that kind of term or money to the Finnish forward.

I want Ryder. He can easily fit into our top six. We can get a lot of use out of him, and I don't think he's going to command a huge price like Filpulla or Bickell (lol).

Give him a two or three year deal for about $4m and I'd be extremely happy.

EDIT: Top six would look great like this:

Hartnell-Giroux-Schenn
Ryder-Couturier-Voracek

We have enough already of what Clarkson brings to the table.
Horton has that concussion thing that is a concern but I think in the end he stays in Boston.
Stalberg is going to get paid this summer. Someone is going to overpay for his services.
Same goes for Filppula. I like both those guys, but I think they get out of the Flyers range.
Not sure how I feel about Ryder.
I think they bring back Gagne on a good cap hit on a 2 year deal

How about none of the above and just use the money to re-sign Matt Read? He's better than any of the names mentioned above (besides Bobby Ryan) and he'll be considerably cheaper.

In my opinion, Matt Read is this team's third most important forward (at the moment) and if Holmgren trades him or lets him hit UFA, his career progression could very well mimic Patrick Sharp.

There's a good chance he rounds into a 60 point forward that can play in every situation. No reason to overpay for mediocre talent this offseason when it will just cost us a more valuable player the next.

Read isn't a bad option. He'll be a hell of a lot cheaper, too.

I also think trying to upgrade the defense should be a priority... but whatev'

My order of preference with those 3:

Horton
Ryan
Clarkson

I'm factoring in their probable prices and ranking them bang-for-buck.

Not sure why but there's something about a guy who relatively exploded out of nowhere at 27 to become a premier power forward that makes me nervous. Clarkson's role changed a lot and his style adjusted. I think it can be tough to keep pace with your opponents when you're playing that type of physical game and I'm not sold on his stability given his career path. Could be wrong but it's my gut feeling.

Ryan's priced the highest and that can make anyone nervous. I worry that all the years of speculation and buzz and courting could have messed with his head. Anything less than top production would be a disappointment, and as a fan that's nerve-wracking.

I understand the Horton concussion concerns but I like that he's been around a hard-working winning environment for the last few years.
