I really really hope the Flyers pick an offensive defenseman in this year's draft. And I'm very high on Morrissey. I wouldn't mind Pulock either, but I'm drinking the Morrissey juice

Ristolainen is a large, physical Timonen.

You can't possibly not want that.

I'll be so disappointed if we don't end up with him. There is no team in the league that shouldn't want this kid.

I don't understand why Nurse is generally regarded as the #2 defender in this draft. Everything I've seen and read would indicate Ristolainen is not only a safe pick, but a potential home run.

Lets say that Colorado chooses Mackinnon and Florida takes Jones and one of Lindholm, Monahan, Shinkaruk fall to #11. If Florida offered Kulikov for the 11th + assuming one of those three guys is there, would you take it. I think Florida might consider something like this since they would have Jones, Kulikov, and Gudbranson on defense and Huberdeau but no real #1 center. If they did the deal they would have 2 good young forwards and two defenseman.

If we did it we would have a defense of

Timonen-Schenn
Streit-Coburn
Kulikov-Grossmann
Gus

That could even open up the possibility to trade Coburn for a forward or another first round pick. So in 2014 we would have

Kulikov-Schenn
Streit-Grossmann/Coburn
Gus-FA

Nurse's upside is a #1 if he reaches his potential, that's why most have him at #2.

Who's to say Risto doesn't have similar upside?

Most of the reports I've read had him projected in the 2-4 range. Anything can happen though, I'm just saying that's why some rate Nurse ahead of him. They like Nurse's potential more than Ristolanien's, even though Ristolanien is the likelier of the two to reach his.

I'm on team Risto as well, but if he's gone at 11, trading back makes sense to me.

Actually, I hate Ristolainen's slapper.

He's got a pretty wrister, but his slapshot is as bad as Carle's.

TSN special earlier said he had one of the best/hardest slappers or did I misunderstand?

Eh, it hits the target, but from clips I've seen it's really slow. His release seems sluggish, and he's not getting a ton of power behind it. It's also not versatile because he can't get it off in tight spaces like Pulock.

Watch videos of Pulock shooting a slapper and then Ristolainen. You'll see what I'm talking about.

My only concern with Ristolainen is his slap shot.

EDIT: I will admit I was doing a disservice to him by jokingly comparing his slapper to Carle's, but his shap shot is definitely not the best.

This is what Bob McKenzie said about it:

Quote:
8. Finnish defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen. The 6-foot-4 blueliner owns what may be the hardest slapshot of any 2013 draftee and he plays a hard, straight line physical two-way game.

Seriously?

Maybe I'm just imagining it though, but from what I've seen his slap shot seems pretty average.

Maybe it's deceptive?

I don't know. Take McKenzie's word over mine.

I will say this. The only thing that made me hesitant on the Ristolainen pick was my concern about his slap shot.

Agree. I think Risto has #1 upside. A defender who is a solid all around at least has the tools to be a #1.

I think he tends to be underrated because he hasn't put up a ton of points, but people forget he is playing against much tougher competition. He is a 2nd year pro being compared to players playing against other teenagers.

Timonen only had 2 points in 33 games in the SM-Liiga during his draft year.

Pitkanen had 19 points in 49 games.

Karlsson had 10 points in 45 games his first year in the SEL.

These guys aren't yet ready to dominant offensively in the pros.

I really think it will be a mistake if the Flyers pass on him because he has all of the tools and with 2 years of pro experience under his belt. Give him another year or two and you'll see his offensive game come around.

The Devils beat reporter reported that the Devils like Jones, Nurse, and Risto so I am afraid he could be gone before we pick. Wish the Flyers could move up to 8.

As much as We need a defender, we will have options at 41. So take into account that this player won't be making an impact for atleast 3 years. With that factored in I say you draft BPA and that could be Shinkaruk who i have no problem with getting at all.

I agree with BPA, but I think Risto is so good I don't mind moving 41 to move up 3-4 spots to get him. I'd rather get the guy who is a pretty safe bet to be a contributor than stay put so we can hope whoever we get in the 2nd round makes it.

1. COL - MacKinnon
2. FLA - Drouin/Jones
3. TBL - Drouin/Jones
4. NSH - Nichushkin/Barkov/Monahan/Lindholm
5. CAR - Nichushkin/Barkov/Monahan/Lindholm
6. CGY - Nichushkin/Barkov/Monahan/Lindholm
7. EDM - Nurse
8. BUF - Nichushkin/Barkov/Monahan/Lindholm
9. NJD - ?????
10. DAL - ?????
11. PHI - Ristolainen

Horvat, Shinkaruk, Domi, Gauthier, Zykov, Wennberg, Mantha, Erne...

There are a list of names that could go in those two picks. We just need to pray one of them isn't Ristolainen. That report out of NJ is concerning.

Unless Edmonton doesn't take Nurse.

And how many years has the top 10 been exactly as projected? I guarantee someone in the projected 10-20 range (likely Domi, Horvat, Shinkaruk) goes in the top ten. That would leave NJ with Nichushkin/Lindholm/Monahan in much the same way we were left with Couturier.

Would be hard for them to turn one of those guys down, I'd imagine.

The possibilities are:

1. Nurse is still on the board.
2. Calgary rumors about Fucale come true (God, I can only hope).
3. Someone in the 8-20 range goes top 7.
4. NJ values an 8-20 range forward more than Ristolainen.

Edmonton may not take Nurse. They do like them, but there is a sense they will go with one of the centers.

I think if one of those 3 forwards are there NJ will pick them. Their beat writer did say if they have a forward and dman ranked equally they will go with a forward, but they do like the big 3 dmen.

Dallas is the real wild card here.

Aside from being Finnish, they couldn't be more different.
