You bring up a very interesting point, Bergeron47.

On one hand, you look at someone like Jonathan Toews, who broke into the league with relatively nobody as his mentor (from memory, he might have had one), and came out pretty darn well.

On the other hand, Sidney Crosby had one of the best players in history mentor him in Mario Lemieux. And look at Sid the Kid today.

RNH and Gagner have actually never had a "good" hockey mentor. Horcoff and Stoll (and Hall)* had Oates, and I believe Horcoff's career was far enough derailed by the time Gagner broke into the league that the finer aspects of being a #1C (which Horcoff really never was) were not passed on.

Assuming RNH > Gagner, the natural latent talent of someone of the ilk of Jonathan Toews might be there to allow him to be a superior #1C next season. That being said, I'd be fully in favour of moving out Gagner if and ONLY IF Riberio/Weiss was signed to a two year deal (at a reasonable cap hit) and the 7th overall pick was used on a centre.

That's a proper transition period rebuild. Weiss/RNH/Monahan|Lindholm/Smith would be okay to decent.

*Hall and Oates reference. Must be made.

I don't think there's anything that RNH can learn from Ribeiro. The guy is a poor example for any young player. I have as much interest in exposing our young players to him as I have to Bryzgalov, which is less than zero.

Era #2
Gagner retained
Drafted Sean Monahan, who steps into a #3C role straight out of training camp
Nathan Horton signed for 4 million dollars (unlikely)
Rob Scuderi signed for 3.5 million dollars

The cap space is an error, era #1 will have severe problems keeping Gardiner, Schultz, Yakupov, Petry and Nugent-Hopkins under one roof. Era #2 will surprisingly have a better time with the cap.

But honestly, which team do you take?

There's a guy on the block right now who would fit in real well with the Oilers. Cory Emmerton from the Wings. Kid came a long way last year. Speed, kills penalties extremely well and he's getting better on a per game basis. Looks like they'll move him pretty cheap due to their logjam up front.

RNH is an absolute stud. I think people could be surprised at how much better the Oilers are next year. I personally believe that RNH and Yakupov are going to take major steps next year.

My newest roster on cap geek:

Trade 1: 7th overall for Sean Couturier.

Trade 2: Hemsky for Zack Smith.

Trade 3: Nick Schultz for Kyle Brodziak w/ $1m retained

Trade 4: Picks for Michael Frolik. Probably a 2013 and 2014 second or something.

Trade 5: Horcoff for very little or Horcoff buyout.

Resign: Fistric and Jones at $1.75m each. They are two of the few physical character players we actually had on the roster. Sam Gagner for $4.75m and Paajarvi for $1.85m

UFA signings: Khudobin for $1.75m, Scuderi/Ference for $3.5m, Paul Ranger for $2m (incentive laden), Boyd Gordon for $2m

Other stuff: I'd probably try to move Brown and resign Smithson for depth, defence, size, and physicality.

Hall - Gagner - Yakupov OR Hall - Couturier - Yakupov
Paajarvi - RNH - Eberle Paajarvi - RNH - Eberle
Frolik - Couturier - Brodziak Frolik - Brodziak - Gagner
Jones - Smith - Gordon Smith - Gordon - Jones
Smyth
Brown

Smid - Petry
Scuderi - J Schultz
Ranger - Belov
Fistric

Dubnyk
Khudobin

cap space: $3.581m

I think Brodziak, Frolik, Smith, Scuderi/Ference adds quite a bit of character and grit. Also, this team would have centre depth and tons of excellent role players and special team players.

The third and fourth line can both play shutdown roles with line 3 being more defensive and line 4 being the more physical.

Thoughts?

He's pretty small...

He is on the smaller side and that's a bit of a concern but he plays a lot bigger than he is. He's serviceable though and he kills penalties.

We have enough guys like that. I'd rather a guy who IS big. It doesn't matter how much heart Gallagher shows, he's still going to get ragdolled by Chara

Dont laugh but Antropov is out there. He's long and hard to play against at times. The only thing that would worry me is his compete level. That's why Im perplexed, and I know his contract is crazy, but why people are so easily accepting of letting Horcoff go. The team played so much better when he came back this season from injury. It's like people want to replace him, with himself.

Im sure you guys have all discussed this at length but is it me or would Rob Scuderi not be a perfect fit for this team too? That and trading Hemsky for a younger d like Kindl in Detroit. All around guy who really came on this year.

Someone affiliated with the Sens said there is a trade in the works with them sending 3 players for 1. MPS? Hemsky?

How many players do the Oilers have that would net a return of 3 players? I don't see either of those guys doing it.

Assistant GM Tim Murray? He outright came and said "we have a 3-for-1 deal ready"? Impressive and plausible. Sorry for the aggression just frustrated with some of the stuff we've seen in the past few days here.

That deal you just proposed is interesting as well. Great return for Eberle but it's hard to justify moving an all-star talent for a package unless our hands are tied and he's forcing a deal.

Link? Not sure who we'd have that would return that kind of value with the possible exception of Gagner but I'm not sure why they'd try to acquire him given their RH center depth TBH.

That trade might bring a better balance to the team but I still wouldn't do it. The value is there but we have too much invested in Eberle emotionally IMO.

Well with Alfredsson soon on the way out they need a top RW to replace him. Eberle would be a perfect fit for them, so it makes sense that way.

I just heard what he said and then came up with a deal, that's it folks.

The last thing this team wants to do is move Eberle. Sure, that would give them Cowen, who I still think will be a great NHLer and Smith, who's kind of a toss up at this point and maybe a Mantha. Just doesnt replace what Eberle brings to the table. You can acquire those type players in separate deals without giving up Eberle.
