Calgary is going to have a rough year if Kiprusoff retires.

Calgary has got to be up there but with Brodie it might not be such a catastrophe if Giordano has a better year this year.

Giordano - Brodie
Wideman - Butler
Cundari - (BPA Out of Camp/Sarich)

We could pick up a guy like say, Ballard on the cheap. Not good, but not horrible either I think. Wideman has been better than advertised, he seems to do well in Hartley's system.

Ducks have a D that as a whole is better then the sum of its parts, but other teams have lesser parts.

Colorado has an awful D...

Avs
Flames

Both have worse Defense than the Ducks.

I think the Ducks D isn't too bad.

Yeah....I was surprised how well Wideman performed last year. Could be one of those players that needs some responsibility to thrive, like Johnson in Columbus. But really, that defence is Giordano, Wideman and a bunch of players who strive not to make bad plays (safe players, but not impact players). Definitely near the bottom.

The Ducks are in the bottom 10 IMO, but had a lot of strong performances. Beauchemain, Souray and Allen all played the best hockey they had played in years. Beauchemain always played well in Anaheim, but he'll likely take a half step back. Souray and Allen both probably regress a bit next year. On the other hand, I think Fowler has the potential to take huge steps forward in the next few years. He played well, but had no puck luck all year. If he can put it all together, he'll be a special player. Sbisa could improve on last year's play too, so I don't see the defence as a whole regressing - just various parts of it shifting in performance levels. That said - the defence is good enough to provide good support to the team in the system.

I would say so. Yes. Worst defense in the league.

Incredible how little respect Beauchemin gets.

Anyhow, this is Colorado and it isn't close. Their #1 defender last year in terms of TOI was Matt Hunwick.

They really have nothing there, at all. Or in their system.

Our defense is not even close to the worst in the league, but you can be damn sure that we will never win a cup with just two guys that are capable of not making an ass out of themselves at any given time (Fowler, Beauch). The rest of the group (Allen, Souray, Sbisa) are pretty underwhelming/old/injured. Serious upgrades are needed if this team wants to compete for a cup. Hopefully Lindholm helps in a year or two

Great defense? I doubt it. Good? Sure. Beuachemin and Fowler are good. So is Sbisa. But the geezer brigade is not at all special beyond that. Lovejoy apparently will not be retained. Allen and Souray are washed up.

We're the worst team in the league by a mile.

Everyone sucks on our roster.

Strange that considering Souray had one of his best seasons in years, while he slowed down somewhat at the end, the schedule was also pretty brutal.

And Allen was actually solid for Anaheim in the 2nd half of the season and did exactly what was expected from him. Not 'washed up' by a longshot.

Please stop now thank you.

I love it...Sbisa is the only guy who has no excuse for his sucktitude. Allen and Souray weren't that bad last year and they can blame it on fatigue because of the rough schedule. Sbisa just isn't good at hockey...hilarious lol

I'm just wondering if posters in general here think the Ducks have the worst defense in the league?
Who said this? Oilers have a worse defence, so do the Flames. I'm sure there's more then that.

Beauchemin was 4th for the Norris. Souray had his best year in a long time and played like a top 4 guy until the very end of the season. Fowler struggled to put up points, but I feel more comfortable with him on the ice now than a couple of years ago (from a defensive standpoint). The defence is at least average as it is.

Allen and Sbisa were underwhelming most of the year. Lydman was ok, but he's no longer a top 4 guy. Lovejoy was a surprise, but it looks like he'll test the market. I'd like to see a top 4 guy brought in, but the Ducks would probably have to shed some salary first.

You obviously didn't watch the team last year. He was brutal and a big part of the reason they were where they were.

Look at our league wide GAA. We're not even close to the worst. In fact our unit this is year was one of the better ones all season. Unless they've got legendary names, no one is really gonna care about our defenders. The fact that people can still be shocked that Beauchemin finished fourth in Norris voting says everything you need to know on that front. Our blueline is fine. And with guys like Fowler and Lindholm still growing, it's only going to get stronger.

1. Colorado: Erik Johnson, Tyson Barrie, and a bunch of pylons
2. Calgary: Mark Giordano, TJ Brodie, and a bunch of pylons
3. Carolina: Justin Faulk, Joni Pitkanen, and a bunch of pylons
4. Edmonton: Ladislav Smid, Jeff Petry, Justin Schultz, and a bunch of pylons

Tampa Bay and Philly actually have decent defence corps on paper, but in reality, they're probably even worse than the 4 listed above
