Ryan Malone perhaps?

Bob McKenzie tweeted something about Malone being a possible compliance buy out for the Lightning.

In the past I have been against getting Malone due to his cap hit, but if he was a UFA and would sign for about $1.5 million, would he be worth the gamble? Would you rather him or Holloway?

It's also possible the Holloway hold u could have something to do with DL seeing who gets bought out, in case he wants to take a run at anyone (not necessarily Malone, just keeping his options open to see who is out there).

Anyways, would you take Malone on this team for that cap hit? He was pretty terrible this year (six goals, 8 points in 24 games) but was a 20 goal scorer last year and has scored 20+ goals six times. In fact he's never had a season in the NHL in which he wasn't on pace for 20 or more goals in a full season. He's got the size and skill for a DL team.

Thoughts?

I say hell no, but Dean has liked Malone in the past. Overall though we have too much on our plate to really consider it. I'd rather give Holloway a shot, Malone is being bought out on a struggling franchise for a reason.

How about Morrow? If Pens don't extend him, I'd like Dean to have a look at him.

If he comes cheap, like $1mil or less than sure. Otherwise would rather roll the dice with youth and Frattin.

Ethan Moreau, Anthony Stewart, Trent Hunter... probably better options out there.

NO to Malone ... and NO to Morrow ... and NO to resigning Penner ... and NO more Ethan Moreau's or Trent Hunter's ...

NO more OLD washed up has-beens with ridiculously inflated contracts !

There's a reason Dean just got Matt Frattin ... he's a younger, cheaper option to be the type of player Malone WAS/is, so no need for Malone really, and yeah I'd rather we give Holloway a shot over Malone as well.

It's time to put Lombardi, Yannetti and Futa's drafting ability to work and get these kids on ELC's into our line-up rotation with some regularity so we can afford to keep our core together and retain our integral pieces (like Scuderi as an example).

Time for Toffoli to step up, time to give Holloway an honest shot, time to get Pearson and Vey a cup of coffee, time to get Maxim Kitsyn over from Russia and get him playing in the AHL and maybe NHL one day.

We've got a VERY GOOD team, we were CLOSE again this year, we just need a small tweak here and there, no need to gut the team or upset team chemistry / unity all that much, which means it would be better to bring in our youngsters from within, than UFA's IMO.

Get Scuderi re-upped, sounds like Dean is pushing hard to get that done next, and then if enough is left get Holloway into the fold, and go into training camp and see what we got. I doubt we do much of anything in the Free Agent Frenzy come July 5th .

this

LA no longer needs to piss away money on aging vets that we know won't amount to jack ****. LA is past the point of using bridge players imo

Use the youth, remain in the hunt then if needed for a playoff push use the saved money and the showcasing of youth to grab the vet if needed

I couldn't agree more.

Kitsyn is already over to NA from Russia with love. He will be in ready for the first camp.

Scuds is getting farther away from us each day.

I agree that we are right about there with the "new wave" of kids being ready to fill holes and should do so sooner rather than later.

This year I would be certain to give Toffoli, Kozun, Vey and Pearson all a serious look to make the team out of camp and whoever doesn't make it can earn call up duty throughout the year to be ready for the next season.

Next season Andreoff, Kitsyn Shore and Weal.

Our kid D will have Gravel Forbort Deslauriers ready to go too.

One of the reasons you put together a great core is so that you can build a great team around them. We have done it and are ready to keep building the team by continuing to add our kids (we have done a great job of this so far and I don't think we will change).

We just don't need to add any aging vets with big contracts to the team. If anything we could probably afford to move one of the ones we have now and might even be improved by doing so.

I agree PuckU.

Moreau and Hunter aren't Malone. Malone's career is better than those two.

Stewart we only got as a favor to Carolina in exchange for a few ok draft picks (and they took Westgarth). We didn't get Stewart to use him.

None of those have contracts, assuming Malone is bought out. If he's not, I said I don't want him with his current deal.

I am going to go against the grain here. I don't think we would have made the playoffs this last year without Scuds.
The Kings were super fortunate to be healthy through the cup run.
I think we got a little lucky last year and Scuds was a big part of that. I say sign Scuds. If he loses a step in two years, we can always trade him

this is what i keep referring to as the 'next core'. in about 3 years, there will begin to be a hand off taking place of the current core to the 'kids'. it is inevitable and has to happen. the sooner these kids are brought in and learn the NHL game, the better in the long run for the club. yes there will be some bad nights, brain farts and missed assignments but it is part of the process.

in the 25 years plus of following this team, this is truly the first time it is positioned to grow in this manner. from others ive talked to that have followed since 1967, this is also the first time they've witnessed this type of 'homegrown organic' growth.

we don't need Malone, he would just be S Gagne version 2013. what we need is the likes of Pearson taking shifts and getting GP at the NHL level. in the long-term success of the club Malone won't do anything for the Kings, Pearson will, Kitsyn will, etc

Sure, no Greene, no Mitchell, and no Scuderi, that would be very tough. They made it without two of them though. If any one of those guys is in the lineup this season, why wouldn't they still make it? Had anyone said that the Kings wouldn't have both Mitchell and Greene this year before the year started, who's picking the Kings to finish 5th? A point away from home ice? Still in the top 10 in GA? More like "SEASON OVER!"

No more vets. And I highly doubt these guys will come cheap. Some other team will pay them.

Signing Regehr was a ****ing dumb move if that means losing out on Scuds, who is better in every way than that D version of Ethan Moreau. Makes no ****ing sense to me.

Preemptive damage control. It looks bad now, but it could have been a whole HELL of a lot worse if Mitchell was done, Scuds walked, and Regehr did also. Then what?

I think he was signed because the team needed another SAH under contract for next season. Did the Kings approach Scuderi during the season last year to try and hammer out an extension? They were talking "informally" according to DL, but since nothing moved forward I'm guessing Scuderi wants to use his well-earned right to explore free agency. Even if the Kings throw lots of money at Scuderi, it's not a sure thing that he will stay, you never know what factors come up.

I don't really see it as going against the grain in wanting to keep Scuderi so much. I would love to keep him even at as much as he has been making easily. I would even go so high as $3.750k for 4years if I had to in order to keep him. It just doesn't seem like we will be able to get that sort of a thing done.

There are several rumors going around about teams that *want* to sign Scuderi and I have posted a few direct quotes from a couple of GM's that are interested and while I don't know what they will actually be offering Rob, the fact that his name is sort of a hot topic on the UFA market among a few GM's leads you to believe that he (RS) isn't going to have too hard of a time getting the reported $4.2m for 5 that he is said to be asking.

You also have to factor in that this could well be his last contract and that he has said that it wouldn't be terrible to end his career closer to home (LINY). Rumor has it that the Pens, Fliers and Devils are going to make a push to sign Rob and it has already been reported that the Isles could be interested.

Here is to hoping but right now based on what I have heard it will take a DL magic trick to keep Rob. I trust DL so it could happen but it is what it is.

Exactly right.

The cycle is supposed to be that we struggle and build a system that can develop the kids that we draft into making the NHL and then we struggle long enough for them to become established NHLers all the while continuing to pick up and develop talented kids to add to the group.

Once you continue on until you have the team you want and go for it all. We did just that and in time we should be bringing more and more of our kids to add to our core until they eventually can replace them. The cycle should be able to continue for years keeping you competitive and at least well enough stocked to maintain a highly competitive core. (Voynov making JJ replaceable is one of many examples but there are even better).

I agree with you WP. Now all we have to do is relax and have faith that DL and co are thinking the same way.
