If the team felt after next season that they were going to have a hard time extending him they could still get a 1st rounder for him at the 2014 draft.
Yes, that's all true, but next year, will that CAR first be a #5? If it is, will we be able to draft someone of Nichuskin's caliber? Will CAR even need a player like Staal still next year? I think it's now or never if we want at least a first back, especially if Nichuskin is available. It fills needs for both teams.

http://capgeek.com/hurricanes/cap-calculator/

only 17 players signed for this upcoming season.. 7,347,500 in cap space.. Someone please explain to me why you think the Canes are going to take on almost a 4mil cap space (which leaves only 3.5M left for at least 3 more players). are going to move the #5 overall pick for a defensemen no matter how badly they may want/need one? They would move someone on the roster (IE Skinner) before they move the #5 overall. The #5 overall will be used to replace Skinner IMO.

edit. This also doesnt taken intgo account a contract for Faulk.

Yup. Pretty much what I said in the previous thread.

Staal wont be one because even if he walks as a free agent in 2 years time they'll still be in cap hell. They committed tons of money long term to Eric and Jordan Staal, Ward and Semin. Staalsy gets 6+ mill on the market.

For 2 years he will be at that price though. And they need his services now. He goes there now and he might not even hit the open market.

What will the cap be in 2 years? It can't be lower than what its at for next year.

A top 5 pick would still have a 3.5 million dollar cap hit. Semin got way overpaid, what a terrible contract.

I agree that the cap will almost certainly be higher in 2 years. But the Rangers need Marc's services now too.

Rutheford is on record saying he'd move a top six forward for a top four defender. Skinner or Ruutu I'd imagine make the most sense, by both have serious injury concerns.

id love Ruutu... dont really like Skinner with his concussion history and complaining to the refs.. Ruutu is also injury prone at times but plays a physical style and adds much needed size to the top 6...

Ruutu is made of glass. I love him but he's too much of a risk for the money he makes. I wonder if Carolina would compliance him if they were really strapped on cash...

Interested to see if Carolina trades the 5th pick. Need a top 4 D. Could be part of a package. Told Rutherford is getting lots of calls.

‏@DarrenDreger
Further to the Carolina tweet. There are financial restrictions the Hurricanes face. Need a top 4 D, but can't pay Letang-like dollars.

This is basically what I've been basing my thoughts on, these tweets have been posted here before. Top 4 D on sweetheart contract, the 5th could be part of a package. Rutherford is a star-****er.

That's what would make me think more is wanted because of that injury risk being heightened. What do you think hypothetically if DZ goes there?

I'm not supporting this but I'm just seeing.

Skinner and Staal both have concerns and both are 100% top players

I wanted to trade Poti for Ruutu during the lockout and I was ridiculed. I wanted to package Prucha and Kondratiev for Ruutu after the lockout and was ridiculed. Then I was laughed at for suggesting a trade of Immonen and Tyutin for Ruutu by NYR fans on the trade boards.

And now you guys want to trade a guy who may potentially remain our #1 d-man, and among the best in the league, for a player who has never been the same after back surgery, and isn't 80% of the player we could've traded extra parts for a few years back

#NYR Rangers also have 3 key RFAs to sign: Hagelin, McDonagh and Stepan. Some basic, preliminary talks so far, likely to continue this wknd

How has Murphy been progressing? Could he be packaged instead of McBain along with the 5th?

Just thought I'd put something different up in the mean time, so here is my hope for the offseason.
We currently have 39 players under contract for next season (10 forwards, 5 d-men, 2 goalies, 22 non-roster). Eight of them are RFA's (Stepan, McDonagh, Hagelin, Zuccarello, Sauer, Ferriero, Mashinter, Palmieri) and seven UFA's (Clowe, Eminger, Hamrlik, Gilroy, Collins, Segal, Vernace) to be dealt with. Out of the RFA's mentioned, count on Step, Hags, McD, and Zucc to be resigned. Sauer along with Ferriero and Palmieri are to be let go. Sign Mashinter to a similar contract he had recently. Here's how the contracts should go...
Stepan: 3-4 years $3-4mil per
McDoangh: 4-5 years $4-5mil per
Hagelin: 2-3 years $1-3mil per
Zuccarello: 2-3 years $1-3mil per
Mashinter: 1-2 years $550-750k per

So say Step gets a 4 year $3 million deal, McD gets a 5 year $4 million deal, Hags gets a 3 year $1.25 million deal, Zucc gets a 2 year $1.25 million deal, and Mash's contract wouldn't matter because he'll be in HWP. That would leave us with exactly $4,655,833 million to work around and puts us at 44 contracts leaving 6 spots open. IMO that's a bit low going into the draft so we'd have to trade. What I would hope for...
-Trade one of Staal/Del Zotto
-Trade one or two of Pyatt/Powe/Dorsett/Asham
Examples:
-Del Zotto to Dallas for a 1st (10), Patrik Nemeth, and rights to Erik Nystrom (sign Nystrom to a 1 year $1mil deal)
-Dorsett and Powe to Winnipeg for a 2nd (61)

With this NYR gets a good 1st and a late 2nd while freeing up cap space and clearing out contracts. The cap with MDZ, Dorse, and Powe gone while signing Nystrom would be $8,905,833. For the draft now the Rangers would select (NOTE: Entirely unaccurate)
1st (10): Alexander Wennberg-Center
2nd (61): John Hayden-Center
3rd (65): Myles Bell-Defense
3rd (75): Nick Moutrey-Right Wing
3rd (80): Wilhelm Westlund-Defense
4th (110): Lucas Wallmark-Center
6th (170): Luca Gracnar-Goalie

A bit forward heavy, but we need center depth. With all this finished we have a good amount of cap to grab a mid line scorer, another d-man and depth/role players. With 43 contracts available, let go all UFA's except Eminger and Segal. Sign him to his normal Ranger contract (1 year $750k) and keep him as a sixth-seventh. Segal's contract would stay in the minors. As for Clowe, I'll let him walk as well. There are bigger and better talent out there in FA land and I don't feel that he'd go well with AV so re-adding Eminger would be fine and that'll make 45 contracts. Here's who I'd target...
Mid Line Scorer: Ryder, Raymond, Prospal, Boyes, Clarkson (also a depth player too), Latendresse, Briere, Antropov, Bouchard.
Defense: Ference, Zidlicky, Fistric, Scuderi, D. Murray
Depth Players (D-men/Forwards): Lapierre, Larose, Fedotenko, Hendricks, Dvorak, Chipchura, B. Gordon, K. Wellwood, Miettinen, Pardy, Sulzer, Benoit, Kostka, Lovejoy
Minor Leaguers: Santorelli, Drazenovic, Bass, Deveaux (yes that big ol' Hawaiian), Nokelainen, Kolarik, Regin, Guenin

Thoughts?

Not a fan of trading Del Zotto for futures unless we have a legitimate shot at the top 7. Sather has never made a trade like that, I don't think he'll start now. If Del Zotto goes, it'll be for a more established piece.

I wouldn't trade Dorsett. The guy's a keeper. There's a reason Jackets fans were most upset about losing him over Brass and even Moore. He's the ideal 4th liner that has some offense in him that can play the 3rd line in a pinch. He's a smaller Chris Neil, give him time.

Would stay away from free agency completely unless Briere or Ryder sign a short term deal. We need that right handed sniper on the power play. I wouldn't mind Gordon or Lapierre to shore up the 4th line. A 4th line of Dorsett-Lapierre-Asham would give other teams fits and draw a lot of penalties if kept disciplined.

Clowe wants to come back here but he'll price himself out. The report that he has medical clearance to play will drive up his market value. Someone dumb will give him more than a 3 year contract, I just hope it's not us.

Buy Richards out. No brainer. Opens up lots of cap space.

Other than that, sign our RFA's and go to war with what we have. Give Kreider, Miller, Lindberg, Hrivik, Thomas, and Fast every chance to make the team out of camp.

Sorry to butt in as a Stars' fan here, couldn't help but say something.

Oleksiak isn't moving unless you're willing to cough up McDonagh or Stepan, which obviously is a no go. Fun to speculate about, obviously, but he's not moving. Prospects like him don't come around very often at all. Please don't think I'm making an offer, because I'm not. Oleksiak just has that much value to us.

Unless we move Goligoski, I really don't think we need or should go after Del Zotto. He's a great young defender, but the cost is simply going to be too high (Nemeth + 10th is actually pretty fair though, I want to keep Nystrom however) and we need to fix our center depth before we go and add another LHD, especially if we really are trying to get Nurse someone on Sunday.

Hope you guys don't mind me being here, someone said something about speculation around our players and I figured I'd take a look and maybe talk some value.

Also, any major news on Richards? Stars' fans have been talking about possibly reuniting him and Loui to see if the spark is still there, and some (myself included) thought getting Vinny and Richards back together (in Dallas, of course ) would be a cool, [barely] realistic idea.

Best of luck on Sunday and next season, guys.

Which brings us to Brad Richards. From everything Iíve heard, the organizational plan was to buy out Richards because it is the only correct business decision for the franchise, not to mention the shocking decline in his game during the lockout-shortened season and playoffs.

It is the right thing to do, and in fact the only choice the Rangers have.

But then again, that was all before Richards was demoted to the fourth line, then scratched for the final two games of the playoffs; it was before Glen Sather did what is widely considered a U-turn on the fate of Richardsí former ally in John Tortorella; and before Alain Vigneault was hired to install a more offensive system. Sather said that scratching Richards for Games 4 and 5 vs. Boston was an organizational decision, and not just Tortorellaís.

So I donít know if all bets are off. I kind of doubt it, because the Rangers have here a golden opportunity to get out from under the $6.67M per season cap hit through 2020 by simply buying out Richards for 2/3rds of the remaining $36M on his contract ($24M) spread out over twice the number of remaining seasons (14 years).
If Torts was still here,he would pushing for Richards to be kept. Torts believes Richards will bounce back. Torts loves Richards as a player and as a human being. Richards took less money to play for Torts here.

Quote:
People argue that Richards is bound to bounce back, with a full summer to work out, with a new fire in his belly to prove last season was a fluke, and with a new offensive coach. But if the Rangers wait until next summer to exercise the buyout and Richards gets hurt during the season, and is still injured when the next round of amnesty buyouts comes due, he cannot be bought out. Then the Rangers are stuck with that contract.
You're assuming he bounces back and plays at a level worthy of the money. The contract expires in 2020. Dolan can pay Richards $24M or he will pay him much more if the Rangers don't use a compliance buyout. The Rangers can't get away without paying Richards. You know with the Rangers luck that Richards will suffer an injury and they are stuck with him. Their only recourse is buying him out in the future with the a decades worth of cap hits counting against the cap.

"Richards took less money" to be with Tortorella? Would he have came to the Rangers if his contract wasn't massively front-loaded? Getting more money up front is better for him in the long-run than getting more money in total.
