The issue with UFAs is...what do they think of the Predators? We were terrible last season, and we seemed to have a hard enough time signing guys even when we're pretty good. Do veterans/productive players really have a lot of interest in coming here?

No way would I pay Horton 6m a year. He is barely worth 5m a year...

I'm just as, if not more, freaked out over that term. 6 years at $6?! No.

everyone saying "no way, nuh-uh" to overpaying for a UFA better reconcile themselves to not getting anyone in the UFA market.

Every year, the few available good UFA's command huge money and long terms. Some GM is always willing to pay the ridiculous money.

Just look at Gaustad... Poile didnt pay him what he did out of a sense of charity... its because if he didnt someone else would have

And that's why $3 mil in dead cap space sucks.

Ferance has been told he will not be resigned with Boston. I really hope we go after him! He should only cost maybe 3m-3.5m a year and won't require a long term contract to land.

2.1 million, actually... but as others have said I never expected us to be within 2 million of the cap to begin with

That length locks him up for the rest of his prime. I could live with that dollar amount if it adds a quality offensive talent and makes us better.

Bear in mind, we're going to pay Paul Gaustad $4M this year. Based on that precedent, $6M for Horton is not out of the question.

The only thing that concerns me with taking that risk on Horton is his concussion history, but then again, I guess if concussion history is going to turn us off to players we're going to have a hard time finding a big, skilled forward who isn't afraid to play physically.

It's doubtful he's worth even that.

Two wrongs don't make a right. $6M for a 50 point guy with injury problems is awful.

So there was something interesting I saw in the trade/free agent forum. What if we target two players with histories together. The three combos I saw were:

Weiss/Horton
Ribiero/Ryder
Bickell/Stalberg

With the notion that Horton is looking for around 6 a year I'd have to say a pass on him and Weiss although I've always thought Weiss would look good in a Preds uni.

Ribiero/Ryder has an interesting angle to it as they are both pretty good offensive players. Are they what we need and are they affordable? Could be a nice fit.

Bickell/Stalberg don't excite me as I see Bickell as a guy who will parlay a great playoffs into a big contract and Stalberg is a fast skater that had trouble cracking the playoff lineup.

All that said, I wonder if we target Ribiero and Ryder.

Ribiero and Ryder would be my choice as well. I bet they're looking for a ton as well.

I doubt any of them would be reasonably affordable, though Ribiero and Ryder would be the most realistic. That said, they are two players that have hopped around a bit and have often worn out their welcome for work ethic or attitude issues. Don't really see them as a good fit here.

I wonder if Ference would take a slight discount to come here to play for his buddy Peterson's team?

So right now our lines look like what?

Forsberg-Fisher-Wilson
Beck-Legwand-Hornqvist
Smith-Spaling-Bourque
Clune-Gaustad-Watson?

We have to add 2 forwards or we're picking 4th again next season.

We've never been a big star forward group but we've always had good depth and could roll 3 lines, right now, we have neither star power nor depth.

Hopefully Clune and Smith (maybe Watson) get replaced with scoring and Spals moves to wing for a center. Clune becomes scratch, Smith/Watson back to Milwaukee.

Smith can't go to Milwaukee, no matter how hard Byrddog tries.... :-)

Ideally we need to push Forsberg off the top line too

I think

real top 6 better than Erat FA winger-Fisher-Wilson
Forsberg-Legwand-Hornqvist
Beck-Barkov-Bourque
Clune-Gaustad-Spaling

looks much better.
