That never actually happened.

Vinny's agent Kent Hughes vaguely confirming that there have been talks for a while now between him and Yzerman regarding the matter:

Quote:
"We understood that his contract and its structure - its cap number - were problematic for the Lightning," said Hughes.

"I spoke with Steve Yzerman when the season ended and said to him that I didn't want to go through the next few months pretending that we don't see or acknowledge that this may be an issue."

"We acknowledge it; we don't want you to ignore it. Just let us know and the more informed we are the better the process will be if that's the decision that you take."

Sucks to see him go... Teams should be aloud one exempt player from the Cap if he is your captain.... Because its deals like this that just piss off fan bases. I'm not even a fan of Tampa but Vinny led them to the cup and everything... Im just trying to picture if the Red Wings bought out Yzerman back in the day... Rioting Detroit.

This really hurts because of the emotional attachment that I and many Bolts fans have for Vinny. He was the face of the franchise for many years. However, I think this move had to be done because his contract was a killer. Like many others, I would like to see him return to the Lightning some day (Ideally after his one season elsewhere).

No, he invested 30 million dollars so that the team can be more competitive in many years to come.

Thats one way of looking at it. Vinik has a lot of money though so I guess just add it to the other millions hes invested into this team so far? We have a great owner to be willing to do that. To do all of that for 10 mil added to cap. Guy wants this team to compete and win.

Must suck for you guys, sorry for the loss... but i'm excited as a leafs fan, he's a possibility to us.

But just came here to make sure if a rumour was true or not? There was speculation that said he'd only go to Montreal if he wasn't able to play in Tampa?

Even though I understand the move and why it had to be done...it still sucks. Unfortunately with the length of the deal and the penalty if Lecavalier retired early, Yzerman's hand was forced. If this team wants to be competitive long-term they can't have Lecavalier's contract on the books when he's on the downside of his career and his retirement would bring about a cap penalty. I wish him the best. No matter what jersey he puts on he'll always be a Lightning and hopefully he can come back to finish his career here. He's the definition of class with all the work he's done in the community and how he's handled himself through all the drama in the organization during his career. No doubt his jersey is going to be in the rafters one day in the Forum.

if we drafted Nichushkin and he took #4, I would personally take it upon myself to kill him. The jail time would be worth it, plus I've been studying Neeson's tactics/moves from Taken just in case.

Like Brian Leetch going to Boston, I could see Vinny going to Montreal because of his family.

Who do you see guys wearing the "C"? St. Louis? Or do you give it to the franchise, Stamkos?
