Realistically you're trading for one of:
- Nichushkin
- Monahan
- Lindholm
- Nurse
Then why would you be targeting the fifth pick?

8+16 and an under-the-breath, wishey-washey sort of apology for the broken glasses. (but not really we meant to break the glasses and we'd do it again)

From the Sabres for the 5th overall (assuming 1st 4 picks - MacKinnon, Jones, Drouin, Barkov):

Option #1
8th overall + 38th overall + Late rd pick

Option #2
8th overall + 52nd overall + 2nd rd pick in 2014 (LA pick)

Option #3
16th overall + A. Sekera

If Drouin, Barkov, or Jones are available at #5, likelihood of trade goes down but the price and value definitely increases:

Option #1
8th overall + 16 overall

Option #2
8th overall + A. Sekera

Any interest from Canes or Sabres fans?

I actually think that these two teams are the right fit for a draft day trade involving the 5th pick and if I had to predict one trade happening in the TOP 10, it'd be Option #1, with either scenario.

The last 6 #5 picks in the draft have been

Morgan Rielly
Ryan Strome
Nino Niederreiter
Brayden Schenn
Luke Schenn
Karl Alzner

Average career NHL goals of that group? Seven. You are probably not picking an NHL ready player at #5. You are probably ending up with someone 2-3 years away that is going to be a solid player but not a star. If you look back, you are just as likely to come up with a Stanislav Chistov as your are a Phil Kessel with the #5 pick. There is a lot of uncertainty here in the draft, which is why these trades so rarely happen. Someone would clearly win, and someone would, most likely, clearly lose a trade like this. Smart GMs don't want to touch that.

huh? this years draft is completely different tho.. top 8 picks = studs

jones/mackinnon/drouin/barkov/nichushkin = impact/elite player potential
monahan/lindholm/nurse = impact/superstar player potential (or more)
horvat/domi/wennberg/zadorov/ristolainen/shinkaruk = superstar/star player potential (or more)

and even after that theres plenty of players that have the potential to become star/superstar players

Using past selections as a reason to trade or not trade a pick is ridiculous.

Can you seriously not figure this out?

Just because the Flames would have MacKinnon ranked #1 doesn't mean there aren't players we like at #5. Teams have ranking lists. Teams miss out on highly ranked players all the time. Still good options, though.

My rankings:
1. Mac
2. Jones
3. Barkov
4. Drouin
5. Monahan
6. Lindholm

#5 still provides a quality prospect.

To Calgary

To Carolina

Mark Giordano
Lee Stempniak
22nd overall selection

To Calgary

5th overall selection

Carolina is in a funny position because they aren't a team that actually needs to rebuild and are a good team. Injury bug really hurt them this past season and they're ready to win now. Hopefully Cam Ward has a healthy off season to make success visible. Mark Giordano would instantly make their blueline better which is their area of weakness, Lee Stempniak would add additional scoring and even though they lose their 5th pick they pick up a 22nd in a very deep draft class. All in all I see this as a very fair deal, filling in both teams needs.

The top 3 in this draft are very good prospects, but you still don't know what you are getting with a #5 pick is all I am saying. All of these guys have question marks. You know who the 10th best player ever picked in the #5 slot is. Of all time. Ever. Tim Connolly. Tim freaking Connolly. Heck the 2003 draft, the greatest of all time draft, saw Zherdev and Michalek go 4th and 6th. This very well could be a very good draft, but I think people with lottery picks tend to get a little bit excited every year. You might get a Jagr. You might get a Ric Jackman.

You obviously misunderstood what I meant then. I'm not saying whoever you have at 1 on your list obviously, to think I mean Mac being there then you're quite thick. I'm saying the guy your team is in love with that is within reach, that may be #2 to 4 on your team's list that somehow falls to 5, say Jones or Drouin, who your team would be willing to overpay to get. The fact you think I mean MacKinnon at 5 means you're the one who can't figure it out. :/

This is true. The 7th overall may also never be as good as James Sheppard. Would you like to trade your 7th for him?
