Typical double-standard IMO. If Reed Low had done that-how long would he be suspended for?

A forearm can give a guy a terrible concussion JUST as easily as an elbow can-especially the way Weight connected on him and the speed he was skating at.

Complete and utter crap. I really think someone will have to literally DIE from a head injury before the league actually decided to do something.

Just like the netting behind the boards. People lobbied for it for years-yet it took a 9-year old girl getting killed to affect any sort of changes. Great timing.

Perhaps it can, but as far as I know forearming isn't an illegal offense in this league. Perhaps Van could verify that for me because I could be wrong.

That said, a perfectly legal hit can injure a player just as easily as an elbow. Should players be suspended for legal hits? That's pretty much what you're telling us.

If it were perfectly legal he wouldn't have been fined.

Whatever you want to call what he did-if you deem it a legal check-I hope half the Blues get clocked like that and see if you still feel that way.

The whole point is that head injuries are an epidemic. Lunging out with your elbow or forearm to a guys HEAD is:
1)Idiotic
2)Ludicrously dangerous
3)Unnecesary
4)Unavoidable by the victim

Do you want to see more flying forearms in hockey? If you do, it looks like Mr. Weight has been given the thumbs up sign from Mr. Campbell.

$1000 bucks, what a JOKE!
this is why this league is so Mickey Mouse. he hit Gagne with a forearm not his elbow but he still had intent to injure he was just off a little bit. I quess next time they'll wait till he gets someone with his elbow and puts a guy out with a concussion to give him a significant fine.

are you serious?
if it were a legal hit we wouldn't be having this discussion. the fact is that he had intent to injure and I have NEVER heard of being able to hit another player in the head with a forearm like an elbow. never. the bottom line is was a cheap hit on a smaller player and he got a slap on the wrist. once again, the league has dropped the ball when the could've made an example out of somebody and say that the league will not tolerate this type of play.

good job Colon Campbell you idiot!

Seriously, I don't even know why there's a debate going on.

If it was an offense that truly warranted a fine, the fine should be in the $5,000 ball park at a bare minimum. Probably more like $10,000 given these guys' salaries. If it wasn't an offense that warranted a fine of that size, then Weight didn't do anything worth punishing beyond the in-game penalties.

It's like the League is saying "well, we don't condone this kind of thing but it's really no big deal, so we'll fine him $1000 (read: meaningless amount)."

Retarded.

The maximum the league can fine a player is $1000.

Cry me a river.

The NHL looked at it and determined that you are wrong. Deal with it.

One has to state an opinion to be called a homer for something they said.

What I stated was fact.

The NHL thinks you are wrong.

The sooner you accept this, the better off we will all be.

He didn't mean you're a homer for saying that the league and he don't see eye to eye. You're a homer for agreeing with the ruling.

That was pretty easy to piece together.

If it was so easy to piece together, then show me where I agreed with the ruling.

All I ever said was that the NHL says he's wrong. I have never once stated my opinion of the incident because I never once got to see a replay of the hit. They don't show many of those at the games.

Weird. In that case, your homerism is made evident by your surly, defensive insistence on stating what is patently obvious, attempting to make the act of disagreement seem absurd, even though (since you admittedly haven't seen the incident) you are in no place to make that judgement.

Of course we and the NHL disagree on the ruling; otherwise this thread wouldn't exist.

What's absurd is that had the NHL suspended him the Flyers fans would have used that suspension as justification for their claim that the hit was cheap. But, since the NHL didn't suspend him, the NHL is wrong.

It's over and done with and if Gagne has a problem with the fining, then when the new CBA comes up next September, he needs to make sure that the maximum fine is raised.

What? How is that absurd? Why wouldn't they disagree with the NHL if they thought the act was punishable by suspension?

I understand that you're trying to imply that Flyers fans are picking and choosing what to agree with, but that would only be valid if the league ruling represented some kind of hard evidence. It doesn't. Their ruling is only representative of their opinion of the incident, which in this case seems to have been influenced by something other than, or in addition to, what we all saw on the ice.

If Flyers fans want to disagree with the league's opinion they're more than justified in doing so, and it would not be an inconsistent act.

I'm not a Flyers fan. My mouth dropped open when I saw that hit, and I'm frankly amazed that he's gotten off so lightly.

yeah but don't just blindly defend the guy because he plays for your favorite team. admit Weight threw a cheap shot on a smaller player with intent to injure, admit that the league blew it and went to easy on him, then move along. all he is doing is hiding behind the league ruling.
