I think that market value for Gagner is 5 million, if he accepts anything less then we're getting a deal. Gagner is going onto his 7th season and has remained comsistent each year for PPG while improving defensively. He would be the number 2 C on 2/3rds of the teams in the league and #1 C on about 5 of them. He's not the perfect #2 in Edmonton behind RNH but the best thing to do would be to sign him and only move him if a better option comes along.

Yeah you could say that, I don't think Alan needs to suck up to Wanye though to keep his writing job for the nation. I think he just legit believes him.

Just seems weird that he would throw all his credibility out the window that he's worked many years on building up over something that will be very easily verifiable in a couple days. Especially considering he NEVER starts rumors.

I believe him, don't blame others if they don't.

I'd be hesitant to give him 5 million. I'm still hoping 4.5 millionish is the spot both sides land at.

If it's true he turned down $4.5M for 4 years, I hope MacT is putting his effort into a trade rather than negotiating. That offer was too kind IMO.

Please, please.... not another GM who overpays everyone. This club has had way too much of that since the salary cap was instituted. No more.

well in the last 6 years, the oilers have had to over pay. when you're a crap team out in the boonies, you don't have much choice.

Like others have stated, if the Oilers build a competitive team, players will want to come here for a fair salary. they won't have to be bribed.

ok. cool.

personally, I can live with 4.75M over 4 years, but I don't know about 6 years.

In addition to having a good team, which I think everyone recognizes we are on the brink of, the second most important thing is you have to establish that when it comes to negotiating you aren't a little b****.

That's what the Oilers need to do, and it starts here. If MacT overpays, player agents will continue to come to the negotiating table with a napkin in hand because they're drooling so much. They have to use this opportunity of the GM change to shake the reputation as a team that is easy to get an extra 10% from.

But that just further's the point. Gagner his EXACTLY on par with Weight in an age-age comparison. One guy became a $7M player in his UFA years. The other guy could be a huge bargain at $5M or less.
Doug Weight scored 74pts in his fourth year post draft (which would be Gagner's 5th).

Gagner hasnt even scored 50pts yet.

How are they on par?

Do you think Gagner is going to score 100+ pts next season? Because that is what Weight did.

Why would he have Brownlee on board then?

My guess, if I may, is a long term contract.
6 years, 26.4 million (4.4 per). Why not go long term, for the next 5-10 years he should be his prime.
With his strong character I think he could even get a 7 year deal if it could help bring down the cap hit a bit...

Wouldn't everyone on here freak out if we signed him for 4.75, proceeded to score 100 points next season and go -12?

Not a good deal for the Oilers. That's top end on term and pretty close on AAV.

If he wants $4.5 per go for a term no longer than four years.. For six years go $4 per.

Can't see anyone giving gags that much over that length of term.

If your 2nd line centre is -30, you're losing all games 9-7.

Lol, because he knows he's going to get moved sooner or later.

But seriously, a guy like Gagner shouldn't be demanding a NTC. He doesn't deserve that. Hall & Eberle don't have one do they?

NTC are worth 500k/year easily.

I'll give him a NTC at 5 x 4 million
