Is Gagner a UFA next summer? That's his leverage if it is the case. He can go to arb and the Oilers cannot trade him if they accept arb ruling. I would be OK with a 5 year deal at 4.5M AAV and full no trade until the final two years, where he could submit 10 team lists where he would accept a trade to.

If he truly wants a NTC then he better take a 1-2 million pay cut because there is no chance in hell that he should get 5 mil and a NTC.

Other than Horcoff, who have the Oilers given a NTC or NMC to?

How are they on par?

Do you think Gagner is going to score 100+ pts next season? Because that is what Weight did.
Do I think he's going to score 100? No... But then Weight only did that once.

But my post was pretty straight forward... All the stats are there. At 23, weight scored 74 over a full season. Gags scored at a 68 point clip.

At 24 weight scored 40 in 48, nearly identical to what gags did as a 23 year old (38 in 48).

After a blip season, weight fell back to earth at age 26... A solid two way 80 point guy.

No one, I'm pretty sure. One of Tambellini's few achievements here was contract flexibility.

I actually don't mind a NTC for Gagner if it gets the $$$ down. He has stuck it out for 6 horrible years, you can't blame him for wanting to see it out and not be jettisoned once we start having some success. Or at least a limited NTC after a few years with a list.

Granted if he wants a fat paycheck (5 mil +) AND a NTC, then i agree, move him on.

Yeah I can't think of anyone. I remember Laraque wanted one in 2006.

Too bad Sam wasn't playing in Calgary.

That's pure lunacy. No way should he get a NTC under any circumstance. He knows that he has the Oilers by the balls and is going for the kill.
Don't give in MacT, it will be a big mistake if he gives Gagner a NTC.

I'm fine with giving Gagner a NTC/NMC if he takes a hit on the cap number, best way to create some cap flexibility down the road.

If he wants a Horcoff contract though(too much money, and a NMC), then trade him.

This is MacT's time to set the tone for contract negotiations in his time as GM.

NMCs can kill a team. Worth doing only if Gagner is willing to give on both AAV and term length.

Gagner's contract is up at a time when player's don't have a lot of power. If he really wants $5M a year for 5 or more years and an NMC I think the Oilers best move is to let him test the RFA waters. Even just enough to get a sense of what the market is.

If he wants a NTC then I'd tell him that he gets paid $3.5 million for 4 years as front loaded as possible. That way if he doesn't improve at all we aren't left holding the bag.

I would front-load a contract for 5 years with an AAV of 4 million limited NMC

Something like
6 6 4 4 2 2

If he'd agree, which is unlikely.

Front loading IMO is the way to go in the event that we decide to move him in year 2 or 3 of the deal, it makes the player much more appealing in trade IMO.

That would actually be a circumstance in which a NTC would be tolerable but as you said, it's very unlikely that he goes for a deal like that

The problem is, the market is kind of set with the O'Reilly contract. We can thank Jay Feaster for that. Gagner, although a different player than ROR is more of an offensive player and that in itself will be their argument. I'd offer him the $4.5 on a 4-5 year deal and hope he takes it. If he's looking for more, the Oilers are probably in for a battle.

Why wouldn't he go for a deal like that? Does he object to the term or the dollars?

AAV of $4M for 6 years and an NMC seems like a truly fair deal under this CBA. Gotta be some flexibility on the player's part.

$4.5M per with no NMC should be the top end of the market for Gagner. If a team is willing to give him $5M per go ahead and sign him to an offer sheet! IMO a first and a third round pick would be the better option in that case.

Good god, I wouldn't even want Hall to have a NTC/NMC. Ganger can have fun somewhere else.

I just don't see him settling for $4 mil/yr even with a NMC.
He and his agent know that the Oilers center depth is horrid without him and he came off of a career year offensively at least PPGwise so they're going for the gold trying to squeeze everything out of a desperate GM that they can.
I just hope that MacT doesn't cave. It would set a bad precedent for future negotiations namely RNH.

No NMC. This guy thinks he's way better than he actually is. If we're going to be great we can't overpay mediocrity.

I was already skeptical about giving him 4.5+ but a NTC on top of that leads me to believe he might just get dealt. That's a lot of demands

Limitied NTC if he takes a lower caphit? Sure.

4.5-5 million with a NTC? Sorry, no.
