Don't see the Rangers doing too much in Free Agency this year, but hopefully they pull of some trades around the draft.

Horton wants to explore free agency, his rights are up for trade

Don't want him. Big contract for a more than likely concussion guy is not a direction I would head.

Rumour in twitter (via Dreger) is that Yotes are close to locking up Smith for 6 years @ 5.5m per. If that and Rask's rumoured $7m per are accurate then Hank is going to get a fortune. Woud now have to be looking at 8.5+

Does it get to a point where you let Hank walk and tank this thing? I'm not sure finishing 6-8 before bowing out every year is worth 8.5-9 million.

"@DarrenDreger: Smith's extension with the Coyotes is still being finalized. Sounds like closer to $5.7 per year x 6 yrs."

the problem is that even the 'average' goalies seem to be getting $5-6mil deals. Is the difference enough to overcome the difference in talent?

A part of my would like to see the Rangers get rid of Slats and try for a full blown rebuild, but I'm pretty sure we'd **** it up

Well Slats would have to go first and foremost. Sather has had more than one rebuild/retool here and has failed every time to put a team on the ice that can score.

Being that I believe that Hank's current contract is already detrimental to the overall balance/depth of the lineup, the answer to your question is without a doubt "yes". The guy is hands down the best player at his position, but I just don't think it's possible to surround a goalie that is making that much money with a team that is capable of winning it all. I wish I had the time to do a rigorous statistical analysis, but my sense is that the variation in goalies from #1 to say, #13, is not large enough to warrant the difference in pay.

I agree. I love Hank as much as the next guy but the reality that's beginning to rear it's ugly head in Rangerland is that the difference between skaters is beating the difference between goalies every time these days. Your chances of winning the Cup with a great team plus Corey Crawford is much better than your chances of winning the Cup with a mediocre team plus Henrik Lundqvist. And the problem is Lundqvist's salary and ability to drag scum to the playoffs and ultimately low draft picks prevents us from being anything but a mediocre team.

That's not to say you don't need great goaltending to win the Cup, you do. But once you're in the top half in the league in goalies, where exactly they rank from 1-15 becomes negligible and the rest is up to the skaters.

Felt this was appropriate. Also, believe this week is going to be interesting with trades, buyouts, and signings. I think we might see something bold, but also can see them standing pat due to the big trade at the deadline.

Boston is losing Horton and now they could be trading Seguin?

they're not exactly trading Seguin away for a 6 night stay in Ohio and a trip to the local mall food court.

This team is too good to tank. If you can't pay Hank and ice a team, you try and trade him. I'd rather trade him and take 50 cents on the dollar than let him walk and get nothing.

Heck, take away Hank, McDonagh and Stepan and there's still worse teams

Agreed 100%. It's sacrilege for some here, and I love Hank, but this guy isn't Patrick Roy. He's the best goaltender in the league, by a pretty fair amount, but he has yet to take this team to greater heights in the playoffs. His teams were never perfect, but were the '93 Montreal Canadiens really anything special? He broke down in the Devils series last year, flat out.

I want to keep him, for sure. But if he wants $9M+, I'd seriously consider trading him, he's garner an ENORMOUS return.

Well, what do you guys think Hank could get in a trade? He has so much value I don't even know what to imagine. And what teams would be going for him?

Certainly would put a lot of pressure on Nail in NYC, as the 'kid we traded The King for'.
