LOTS. Bye-Bye Brooks Orpik, this year or next; and bye-bye Tyler Kennedy ($2million), J. Jokinen ($2.1 million, nice for playoff run but won't be retained going forward if others are), and bye-bye Tanner Glass (can be replaced at half the salary). Oh, and probably bye-bye to Matt Niskanen this year or next, too ($2.3 million)

Oh yeah, and while the cap is going down next year, it will start to climb after that. (It's not 100% certain it will go up every year, but we've all seen the trend of revenues with this game).

I suggest you look up the difference between UFA and RFA.

You have to figure Sutter is going to want $4 million and then if Despres pans out like the Penguins hope he does he is going to want $3-4 million, Pouliot gets $1.3 million, Maatta gets $894,000, Dumoulin gets $900,000, Harrington gets $896,667, a back up goaltender for $1 million and that leaves under $7 million to sign 7 forwards. Even if the cap goes up $6 million it leaves them under $13 million for 7 forwards and that is only if they count on having 4 defenseman who haven't played in the NHL yet.

It looks like it is going to be an extremely difficult job for Shero after next year. The numbers are there for everyone to see, it is going to be a difficult job for Shero and if he pulls it off while having contributions from players besides the guys he has signed or will be RFA's after next year he will have done a terrific job.
It looks like it will be a challenge for sure, but I'm sure Shero and Co. have done their due diligence and have a plan in place. He seems to be a capable GM in spite of the flack he took for his deadline deals. I'm sure it will work out. I think they'd be wise to forget about dealing future assets for rentals now though. They'll need as much talent as they can get coming in on ELCs in the coming years.

But again, this still isn't an official signing. Things can still go haywire with all these GMs in the same room getting antsy.

So I take it Iggy's not going to be retained.

2013-2014 Pens: 50.6% in top 5 players (Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Martin and Fleury)

2014-2015 Pens: 55.4% in top 5 players (Malkin, Crosby, Letang, Neal and Fleury) if cap remains 64.3 million.

50.6% if cap increases to the projected 70 million. So, the increase in Malkin and Letangs contract if offset by the projected increase in cap.
Even if the cap does goes up to 70 million there is still a sizable difference between 50.6% and 42% which is the average of the last three winners

Even without a signed Letang, I'm not sure he would be retained.

38.33% of your cap space to three players seems to me to make it rather difficult to fill out the rest of your roster with quality. And rolling four offensive lines has shown to be a major plus. Even if your stars get shut down, depth comes through.

That's what would concern me as a pens fan.

Good deal for the Pens. You have to sign your stars and worry about the rest later. The cap will easily be over 70 million when Letang's contract kicks in and they'll have no problems.

Successful teams in the NHL all have this in common: they have nearly half (or more than half) of their allotted salary cap space...tied up in just five players.

I'm not sure how the Pens fill out the rest of their roster even without Iginla now.

But none of those two have the two best players in the world or the best offensive defensemen either

Cross another one off the list.

All those brilliant "hockey insiders" that spent the last week making fans think that Letang was being to be traded.

All for not. What a surprise.

Pittsburgh is banking on a big cap bump next year or else they are in some serious trouble...

Going by Capgeek they already have 45m committed to just 8 players.

I like how people are automatically calling it bad and saying the Penguins will be in cap hell even though they have no knowledge of the situation whatsoever.

huge overpayment. The guy gets points due to playing 30 minutes a game with 2 of the best forwards in the game scoring at 100 points/yr, and his defence is suspect since he is expected to shut down the best with that kind of contract

Also, LETANG'S CONTRACT DOES NOT TAKE EFFECT UNTIL 2014-2015. Swear so many people don't know this.

He wanted close to 8 million. Pittsburgh original offer was 8/56... he settled for 5/58 instead of 8/64+

It's a nice deal in the end. It's high, but worthy. If he can control his mental issues; he's going to win Norris'

The Pens don't have the best offensive defenseman either. Letang is good but not that best.
