Jones was widely considered the best player in the draft. I am ecstatic that we got him. Think about how long all these guys are signed for. We are in an incredible position defensively and offensively. Jones is going to open up a lot of options for us on the power play. I think the reason that Jones fell to us was that the teams picking ahead of us wanted a clearer instant impact player. Defensemen take longer than forwards to have that type of impact. We are one of the best teams in the league for developing defensemen, so Jones should have all the support he needs to become a great defenseman.

This allows us to put Ellis, Blum, and Ekholm on the trade block. We should aim for a proven commodity, and not another draft pick.

Buffalo and Calgary, maybe Columbus. Glad we didn't take them.

How so? Who is he like? Shea Weber? Like that would be a bad thing?

Too much of the same type of player is pointing to the redundancy at center with Legwand/Fisher, and with the bottom 6ers like Halischuk/Spaling/Yip etc.

The only way you can have "too much of the same type of player" with top picks is if you are the Edmonton Oilers.

That wouldn't work because True North isn't trying to sabotage the franchise like the chick in Major League

Lindholm? Monahan? He didn't have to take Nichushkin just for the sake of taking a forward. He could have traded down; I have a hard time believing he got no offers.

The cynic in me says we will sign no reputable free agent forwards, and we will be in this position again next June, but we might not be. We might be one of those teams on the fringe of the playoffs who doesn't quite make it, and we end up with a mid-round draft pick again. If it takes us 15 years to get back to this position, that's probably 15 Stanley Cups that will pass us by.

I really wanted to see the Preds take a forward but its an understandable pick from DP's position. With Mack, Drouin, and Barkov gone, and Jones being considered much better than any other forward, what else was there? So if anything Im disappointed none of the big 3 forwards fell to 4th, but I cant say im disappointed in the pick itself.

Poile already back pedaling on "we need a veteran top 6 F to replace Erat" comments. Now says, "Forsberg may replace Erat this season"

We need an other To6F badly

If we trade Josi because we drafted Jones I'll be pissed. In fact, I'll be pissed if we trade any of Weber, Josi or Klein now. Our blueline could be solidified at the moment. Trading away one of those three only means we open up a new hole to fill. It would take a major overpayment for it to be worthwhile.

They can ask all they want but they would have to overpay by a gigantic amount to get him and I doubt any team would be willing to do that.

Bob McKenzie just compared Mueller to Josi and then said that most of the teams calling Nashville lately for trades have been asking for Josi.

Poile on Jones' chances of making the US Olympic team (of which he is GM): "They're improving."

So lets say we pass on Jones, get a late 1st and get Monahan. We would win the cup?

Agreed

He can play on the 3rd pairing and really help out while not having much pressure on him.

Funny how the posters on HF who were down on the Josi signing were saying he isn't proven, yet professionals in the NHL are all high on him.

Gotta be honest with you, I was hoping we could trade something to get back in the first and get Mueller. The kid is a stud on D. Not that we need one but Mueller >>>>>>>> Ellis

The pros in the NHL also say we had the best pick in this draft.

I hate that we didn't get any of the other 3, and we didn't need defense but Jones was by far according to most a top 2 in this draft, Poile had to take him.

How big is Jones? I've seen 6'3" 205lbs and 6'4" 207lbs.

Maybe. I think we'll all be happy with Jones, but it does sting to think we would be coming away with a potentially elite forward only to end up with a defender.
