Suter is markedly better than Letang. In fact, even as a Bruins fan, I'd take Suter over Chara if I had a choice.

Sorry but you cannot be an outstanding offensive defensemen and not be a good PP QB

He's also above average defensively. You wouldn't know it reading some of the cretinous post Boston series evaluations, but he is. He's strong, fast, physical, nasty, great at closing down players one-on-one off the rush. Where he can struggle is with the odd poor decision in danger areas, which is hardly uncommon for a dynamic 26 year old playing 25+ minutes a night, especially one playing with 3rd pairing calibre players who can't insulate an occasional gaffe.

Your standard for a defenseman making ~7 mil per is unreasonable given the UFA climate too. Karlsson and Doughty, who have both struggled with consistency, got 6.5 and 7 mil as RFAs. Weber and Suter have close to 8 mil cap hits, but those are artificially lowered due to the cheap years tacked on at the end. These guys are making 10+ mil over the first 8 years of their deals. Geezers who are worse offensively and defensively than Letang like Gonchar and Streit are getting 5+ mil on 35+ contracts.

So there's the detailed report on why your assessment of Letang's deal is off-base. In other words, your Lidstrom comparison is hopelessly out of date. You might as well be talking about how much Ray Bourque made for all the relevance it has.

The dubiousness of that assertion aside, he is a good PPQB. He doesn't excel at a lot of the things that conventional PPQBs do (big shot, composed playmaking), but his speed and raw talent more than compensate.

Letang missed 13 games this year and still finished top 10 in PP points. People are prioritizing aesthetics over effectiveness.

Whatever. I don't really care to debate the whole Suter/Letang/Chara thing. I allowed for 5 better than Letang and I'll stick with it, without getting in to catfights about the ranking one by one.

I just don't get this, his speed makes him a good PPQB? I'll take a shot and composed playmaking on a PP over speed.

Hopefully Letang transforms more of his raw talent into on ice performance the next few years.

Believe it or not, the ability to get to loose pucks, beat an opponent, or hold the line is a great advantage in any offensive situation.

As for more of his talent translating into on-ice performance...he's already shown he can literally produce at a better pace than every single defenseman this side of Karlsson. Any improvement he makes on the offensive front is just gravy.

Keep giving bags of cash to your no wins and 2 goals against teams higher than the 7th seed in the playoffs.

See two can play that game.

Maybe? What does that have to do with the fact that he's average defensively?

at the end of the day, neither team won the cup and pittsburgh will be going into next season with a stronger roster.

I have no clue why people don't understand you pay the 26 yr old Norris finalist what he's worth.
As if they are an abundance of those in the league.

Ah I love how Flyers fans always come to troll.

Most of pens contracts are steals so meh. This is overpayment at least right now, might be good deal if he gets rid of his constant brainfarts in his own end.

If you didnt have so much money tied up in injury prone players maybe you wouldnt get **** on every time the playoffs roll around. Last 4 playoff have been nothing but embarrassing exits from the playoffs. Chokes, sweeps, and upsets.

Congrats that you had to include all of the last 4 playoffs since the last time Pens won the cup. Also congrats on your poor last 20+ playoffs.

So Penguins won a Cup and have done nothing but get humiliated since, Last time I checked you getting crushed by a poor playoff team just reflects even more on how worthless the Penguins are in the playoffs.

Watch alot of Pittsburgh do you? He had like 15 points the first two rounds. Sure he wasnt good in the third round against the Bruins but one series does not a player make. Plus he just turned 26. His best years are all ahead of him. Chara had his run and its almost over....thank God.

Would you rather have Crosby, Malkin and Letang at 25.5 million or Ovie, Backstrom and Green at 23.5 million?
