Santini is a few years away and Fucale is good, but, I like this. Sekera isn't Coburn, but we wouldn't have been able to get Coburn for McBain (A castoff) and a mid level 1st that'd be a couple years away as well.

This is another classic JR move to put immediate needs over a long term plan. Classic Canes

OTOH, I know nothing of McBain -- scouting report?
Offensive defenseman with a great shot, reasonably responsible in his own end. Had some conditioning issues coming into camp this year, and was in the doghouse most of this year, probably for similar issues. Looked like a star when he first came up, so if you can get him to work, he could be a pretty good player.

Canes couldn't have at least got back a 3rd or 4th?

wow, terrible trade for Canes...#35 alone huge overpayment for Sekera, throwing in McBain does not make sense at all...

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 45s

Andrej Sekera was the player Carolina was after in pre-draft discussions with Buffalo over flipping picks in the 1st.

Haha...

See I would have been elated if this was #66 and McBain + someone like Bowman, but this hurts. Could have had our goalie for the future right there. Or Santini, or Heatherington, etc.

On the plus side, this contract is nice for a top 4 guy, very affordable. Should make an OK #3/4 guy for us next year.

This. A million times this.

Jesus, why the hell is JR so GD opposed to building this organization a solid foundation. As in a GD farm system! CAN'T keep dealing our high picks. CANNOT!

McBain had negative value. We'll see how Sekera works out, but I don't see him as the type of player that "completes" our defense.

Except we've got a very small window to work with, so immediate needs makes sense

I don't like this trade, I really don't like this trade.

I was fine with Lindholm. Not happy about this. Sekera is NOT the dman I had in mind...

Safe to say that this is our defense for opening night?

Pitkanen - Sekera
Faulk - Gleason
Murphy - Harrison

Perfectly fine with this. McBain was horrendous and Sekera is a damn good defenseman. We gave up a prospect who wouldn't be here for three years anyway to majorly upgrade our defense. Nothing to complain about.

The only reason I can think that it had to be #35 was that Buffalo didn't want to take on McBain.

We swapped terrible d-men, AND gave away the best goalie in the draft?

JR's an idiot.

Fantastic trade. This helps us right away and gives us a cost controlled option for the next two years. I like the move. Hate that we didn't swing getting ANY pick back in the deal but it looks good to me.
