Pierre Lebrun: The #Habs inquired on Alex Edler, offered a package that the Canucks didn't consider good enough. Will circle back #Canadiens

hmmmmmmmmmm, wonder what it was. i think its safe to say that diaz is probably a piece

Edler is a great player, it's encouraging that Bergevin recognizes how bad the Habs defence is, but I'm not sure what the Habs have to offer. Vancouver probably doesn't want salary back and his price tag is 5 million for a long time.

The best move would be to find a veteran D with a year remaining on his deal, so he could move on in time for Tinordi or NB to be a regular in 2014-15. The team needed a defensive upgrade before Emelin went down, now they really, really need one.

Don't want Edler. He's a good offensive Dman with size but he has had chronic back issues including surgery a couple years ago and he has a big contract with a no trade clause beginning at midnight. Not to mention he'll cost an arm and a leg. No thanks!

Lebrun just said on the TSN TV panel that Habs actually made an offer that was rejected by Gillis but Bergevin would probably come back again with something

Pass on Edler for me too, especially with a NTC.

i would love edler.. everyones been wanting a high class PMD, his contract is actually pretty decent(especially for a solid PMD) and hes a much better overall defenseman than say letang. he obviously has less offencive upside but he can still put up 40-45 points a season

would be a perfect replacement for markov imo

I would go nuts. I love Edler.

We have to start planning for Markov's departure. Edler does that.

Besides, Gillis is apparently asking the moon for Edler. No thanks.
I'm not a big fan of going after Edler. We have a group of offensive d-men already, don't want to spend assets or cap room on Edler.

Not sure I agree with that assessment. Bergevin probably sees like most of us that Markov has slowed down drastically and his stay with us may be nearing its end. That leaves a gaping hole at offensive left-shot dman, if you consider the other regulars were Gorges, Bouillon and Tinordi.

If we're convinced that Beaulieu will be a player, great ! We're good. But since I'm not sure of it, I certainly wouldn't mind adding an Edler (given we make sure his health is ok) if the return price asked isn't crazy.

There's a quote from Markov on Twitter that he thinks he may get dealt. I think if we can get younger we will.

Edler's a 6'3 All Star in his prime. Am I the only one thinks its really surprising that he's available? If the Habs were acquire him, he would definitely be the best player in the trade. I'm guessing it would be a decent prospect, a roster player, and a pick?

I think first and foremost the Habs need to get someone that can skate and move the puck. They only have one defenceman that can do both. Then sign a big dude.

The only thing is I bet the Canucks want Tinordi.

Gillis can kiss our ass. He wants to dump 5m per over many years, not take salary and pick our top prospect D....

Would probably give the Canucks Tinordi for Edler, as long as they took a ****** contract like Desharnais or Moen with it.

Cap goes up starting next year, coincides with Markov and Gionta's contract ending too.

Options are there.
