What kind of vibe are you getting in Portland with these contract extentions?

Nothing yet... It's early. The diehards would have liked to see a change because they don't like the develop first, win second model, but is more because of the affiliation.

PORTLAND – It’s very possible the Portland Pirates will have a Domi, Hextall, Samuelsson and Burke in its lineup in the not too distant future.

The Pirates NHL parent club, the Phoenix Coyotes, selected six players during Sunday’s NHL Entry Draft at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

At least the goaltending should be solid. Going to be interesting to see how quickly the new guys can adapt who can step up in the scoring department to replace those that left.

I can’t see this being the final roster for the Pirates come Sept. The fanbase will support developing players for the NHL, but they’ll only go so far. They need something that says we at least give a damn about Portland…. The Coyotes still need to add two defensemen and at least one bona fide forward who can play alongside Miele and Brown.

I'm not convinced that Rundblad or Goncharov will be back despite being qualified. I think Goncharov will come to camp in Sept, but instead of being assigned to Portland he will be sent to Russia and Rundblad I believe will just stay in Europe to make his money. PHX is going to roll with 8 D right for this season so they should be ok from an injury POV, but Portland will desperately needs some skill on the blueline.

The rest of the RFA’s will more than likely accept their QO’s, imo.

.
We really need to get some Vets on the roster. We are far to young. I really don't feel comfortable with any of the current players as a true capt for the development of the players professionally and to keep them in line. We saw how it was with a bunch of young players and a weak capt as in Arsene. We also saw how it could be with a leader like we had in bolduc.

So how does the talent compare to other AHL teams? Is our D a step above?

Goaltending will be strong. The rest of the team is iffy, imo. Too many variables. PHX still needs to add a veteran to the blueline and how will the young forwards respond. If they mature quickly Portland could be a pretty good team, but if they are slow at grasping the system its could be a long season.

Is Mathieu Brodeur no longer with the team?

Is there any chance Connor Murphy gets sent back to junior to play his overage year, since he hasn't actually played a full season of junior?

Can Melindy play in the AHL this year? I thought he had to go back to Moncton for one more season, since he's 19?

Thanks for all the info, even in the off-season!

Brodeur would be a good candidate for an AHL contract.

Edit: Melindy turns 20 in December so that's his "junior age". This would also probably enable him to play in the A this upcoming season.

No Brodeur is still with the team... It was my error.

Murphy will be with the Pirates this season... The Coyotes want to get him under their control and Melindy can play in Portland this season because although he's 19 when the season begins he'll turn 20 on Dec. 11th.
