Theodore is a UFA. Why are we giving up something to get him?

The deal is essentially Eberle for Dmitri Kulikov, with the Panthers adding in the trade for Theodore's signing rights. Gives us some security in being able to sign him before FA starts.

What has Kulikov done exactly to warrant a player of Eberle's calibre? Maybe something like Gagner+ for Kulikov+, but Eberle is a proven first liner. Jose Theodore literally has 0 value.

Then it is horrible value. Kulikov does not net you Eberle. Then you added pluses in EDM's side?

Sorry, folks. Just tossing an idea out. Feel free to add to it or adjust it to make it more fair.

Kulikov + Goc for Eberle?

Florida can't afford to give him up.

Edmonton doesn't want to part with Eberle.

Oil fans might be willing to say that it's a fair deal if Florida adds something equivalent to 20-30% of the value of Kulikov. I donno. I'm crazy.

You are not going to add a few pieces to make this work. Value wise the Oilers get the short straw for sure, but the starting point of the trade does not really make sense for either team. I'll comment from an Oiler perspective an let the Florida people make their own case for why trading away a defenseman of Kulikov's calibre may not be so wise.

The Oilers are not some offensive juggernaut that can roll on without a guy like Eberle. And while Kulikov is an excellent young defensemen I am not sure that having just drafted NUrse this is the type of deal they want to look at.

Kulikov is a left handed defenseman. At this point the Oilers have Smid, N. Schultz, Klefbom, Marincin, Nurse, Davidson, Gernat, Simpson, Laleggia all on the left side. (Belov is a lefty who plays on the right). There has also been talk of Paul Ranger possibly in Edmonton. So while Kulikov would be a great addition, he is not needed at the cost of Eberle going forward.

First off, that isn't 'crap'.

Secondly, while you should value your prospects highly (even though Gudbranson isn't techmically a prospect), that trade would set the Oilers back several years. Losing a young NHL veteran centre and their top defensive defenseman would hurt immensely. Moving them for a defenseman with high draft pedigree and a big centre prospect is essentially like throwing your money into a wishing well and hoping for immediate success.

Smid your top defenseman? Ouch..

Gudbrason is gonna be a beast, and is a righthanded shooter, which aren't too many off.

Bjugstad has already played a couple of NHL games to get a feeling for the NHL.

If you don't think Florida gets bent over in that deal, you're delusional.

Gagner has been thrown into every Oilers trade, and there is a good reason for it.

Eberle didn't even have a bad year, He just didn't play like himself and a lot had to do with this fact he played a long stretch with a big cast on his finger because of a broken finger. I really Like Kulikov but Oilers added more? Doesn't make sense.

"top defensive defenseman." As in blocking shots, shutting down the other team's top line, PK time...you know...Defense.

Gagner has been thrown around in a lot of proposals because he is approaching UFA status and Edmonton supposedly needs size in their top six. He's been a consistent ~45 point scorer since he was 18 years old.

He's already Stephen Weiss and he's only 23 years old.

My post has nothing to do with Florida's valuation of the trade. I was simply stating that it would set back Edmonton several years of development. You can't deny that.

But I will point out that Gudbranson isn't a surefire top pairing guy when you consider how he's trended so far. Draft pedigree is one thing, but a career -41 in his first 100 NHL games is surely something to be worried about.

This argument keeps being brought up when discussing Gudbranson. Plus/minus isn't always the best judge of any player. I had previously found a link that showed the stats of a lot of young defenders first 100 games. What I saw in that was a lot of guys who are/were top pairing guys in their prime who started out with some pretty bad plus/minus numbers. Guys like Hamrlik, Orpik, etc all started their career as -30 or worse and we know how these guys developed. So no his plus/minus isn't really something to be concerned about at all.
