I would seriously doubt that he makes it to the Rangers some bottom feeder team needing defence help will pick him up.

Ballard does a lot of good things. He's gritty, he blocks shots, he plays in your face and he's got talent. For whatever reason, Alain Vigneault and his coaching staff never seemed to like him. Constantly buried on the depth chart, had lesser-talented scrubs and untested rookies played ahead of him, they even tried him out at forward and still decided to play the likes of Sestito and Weise over him.

I think he would thrive with a new coach, and if someone claims him, they could end up getting a steal. Sad that a trade couldn't be worked out, but I'm hoping for his sake he gets a shot.

I got roasted by Vancouver fans last summer for bringing up Gillis would get nothing for Luongo and Ballard was garbage. Looks like I went 2/2.

Alain Vigneault ruined Ballards reputation. He is actually still a serviceable top 4 Dman

At first I saw 'D Keith' and 'waviers' in the title and I was like

But then I saw Ballard.

C'mon Islanders...isn't this how you pick up 1/4 of your roster each year? He is better than Hickey and you lost Streit.

Yes. He made a mistake. Unlike other GM's who are perfect.
We lived through the Nonis years of trading second round picks for useless players so we no longer expect perfection.

Not the only questionable decision he's made.

Nope. He's made some good ones too. People forget that he signed Hamhuis and Garrison. Probably two of the better pickups on defence out there. Not to mention picking up Chris Tanev for free.

This was probably the most predictable move Van was going to make this offseason and people are complaining about Gillis because of it.

I could see a team with a ton of cap room like NYI giving him a shot.

They need physical 2-way D:
Visnovsky - Hamonic
McDonald - Ballard
Hickey - Strait
Carkner/De Haan

Bring him to Pittsburgh to unite with his old pal Vokoun. That'll make Tomas vigilant at all times since he'll be looking out for sticks in his face.

It's a bad marketplace right now. Even teams with garbage defence are likely to give their ELC D a shot this year. Like others, I think Ballard is a very good reclamation player, who never got a fair chance under AV.

My thoughts exactly. He was a very effective player before he came to Vancouver and then he hit a wall.

Of course. He gets no credit for the good moves but all of the blame for the bad ones.
Anyways, he's completely remade the defence. With Corrado having a good shot to make the team next year. This is a real strength of the team.

95% sure he clears, 5% chance CGY claims him IMO.

Honestly with how bad the Avs D is, I would not mind getting Ballard since we have a ton of cap space anyways.

because he doesn't just make bad moves, he makes bad moves and then lies to everyone saying they're good moves. then winds up embarrassing himself and the organization. His criticism is well deserved.

Problem is Ballard has the big hit into next season as well. Avs are going to need that cap space/money to sign the current roster and/or add a true upgrade to the D.

If Ballard was simply a 4.5 cap hit for this season, the Avs might gamble on him. But given that the hit also is for next year, probably best to pass.
