How did the third rounders conditioning look? I heard Duclair is one of the best skaters this class. If he can get his head on straight he can have a really good season next year. I hated the pick at first, starting to warm up to it even though his lack of improvement in his stats is alarming.

Buchevich I have no problem letting develop in the KHL for a couple years. Worked ok for Tarasenko. He seems like he can protect the puck very well in some highlights I've seen. Jagr like, almost.

Tambellini I'm meh on, another guy that can go either way. NCAA should be his way to go.

McIlrath is scary just in his interviews LOL. Definitely put on some weight since last year. An exciting guy to look forward to

regarding signing draft eligible players such as Tolchinsky -
what i recall reading from last year at this time (perhaps from these boards) was this:
if you brought a player like that to prospect camp, you had a brief exclusive window (2 weeks? 4 weeks?) to sign him, before he was again just future draft-eligible
Perhaps it was mentioned at the time regarding NYR camp attendee Myles Bell, big D-man from WHL (with some tragic bad judgement history). This season, Bell got moved to forward, with great success (like SJ had with Burns at NHL level this year.) The Devils drafted him on Saturday.

On a separate but related prospect note, (which could reoccur with Buchnevich or Tolchinsky), its too bad no one mentions Pashnin anymore.
He made strong impressions very time he came to NYR camps, but staying in Russia offered way more money than an NHL/AHL 2-way contract. Eliteprospects indicates his current contract is up, but the beyondtheblueshirts believes he has signed an extension. He's just 24.

interesting that Messier's Harvard-bound nephew Luke Esposito was on the early P-camp rosters but isn't now. Same with RPI's Matt Neal.

As usual some inner-circle kids are there, the dad's of Krushelnyski and Barnett go back with Slats to the Oiler dynasty days.

So why did Tolchinsky want undrafted? From what I have read about him it's just doesn't make any sense to me. Must be something else than just his size.

#NYR third-round pick LW Anthony Duclair showing a little defensive tenacity during first prospect camp scrimmage.
Good to hear. With his speed, he should be all over the place.

Brady Skjei, the #NYR first-round pick in 2012, is suited up and ready to join scrimmage. He arrived in NY late yesterday.
More good news.

At #NYR prospect camp, Boo Nieves, second round pick last year, can skate well.
We knew that already. Should be a very fast paced game with Duclair and Nieveso out there.

Its not easy to be 150 lbs.

A true super skilled player should score like what, 150 pts in the Q? The midget scored a PPG instead. I am not saying that this kid can't become something, but my impression is that he got quite a long way to go.

The Russian we did draft seems to just have much more of a pro-composure if you get what I mean.

^^^ A generational talent could score 150+ points in the Q. The top scoring forwards last year scored 110 points. Tolchinsky played in the OHL anyways, (top scorer had 109 points) and was the 3rd highest rookie scorer behind Connor McDavid and Nikolay Goldobin.

Not that he doesn't have a long ways to go, just saying I think your comparisons and expectations are off. The Q isn't the super high scoring league it used to be compared to the other CHL leagues

It is kind of strange unless there are "character concerns", since he played in the CHL last year, did pretty well, and is a skilled player. You'd think someone would have taken him in the 7th round or something.

Maybe he also measures out smaller than his stated stats and teams have big concerns about his ability to play in a bigger league

By composure you mean size.

Video of Duclair. Seems to be a bit feisty and willing to battle. Who is that d-man? Donnay? He kept up pretty well. Nicholls looked good retrieving the puck. He looks like he has some speed as well.

Oops.

Reason he fell, he doesn't have a pro-composure. His legs moves like the wing of a colibri and the puck is like glued to his stick. He seems to be extremely hard to get a hold of. I think there is a risk he would be really marginalized if you put him up against men. Short legs just gives you a short stride, and the top speed is held back. You can attack without being physical in the NHL, but -- and while you also can go to the net without being physical -- a really small player must also be able to play more or less like Kane. IE find open ice and take advantage of it.

Who knows where this kid can be in 4-5 years. There is alot of things to like about him. But I don't think necessarily 30 NHL teams are stupid for passing him over. That's just my point. I think the Russian factor had little to do with him being passed over, as opposed to the kid we did draft.

Sixth-round pick G Mackenzie Skapski now manning Blue's net in scrimmage. Was impressed with G Ryan Faragher's agility in first half.

He'll be better than Erskine. I don't get the Erskine comparison since Mac can already skate better than he ever could.
