One #Preds thing I'm hearing: Don't be too sure that SK74 is headed for the KHL.

Seems like he would be in the know.

You mean to tell me that people on here glorify players because theyre on another team and are therefore assumed to be saviors? Naaaaah.

Fillpulla is the only player on the 'usual suspects list' that I'd say actually has an ability to bring something to the table. The others are pure meh filler.

Maybe they can agree on a trade.

I really feel like Iginla is someone we will talk to if he is willing. Can't scratch the feeling that he is one of BT and DP's targets

He will not even consider the Preds. He will be looking to go to a team that is a strong chance at winning the cup. We are not there yet.

I think the pieces are there to be convincing, but I can't disagree that this could be his complete rationale.

A lot of the teams he talked too are no where near contenders either.

I mean really, outside of Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA and maybe Anaheim, St Louis and San Jose, who else are "true contenders"?

Washington's defense is a joke just like Philly's. Montreal, I don't think so, same with Toronto and Vancouver, just seem to be missing something.

Ottawa is borderline too.

Everyone else needs someone to get hot and carry them, and stay extremely healthy.

Please not this guy. No doubt of the talent but the memories of the Calgary issues of the past. Granted Leggy is the only player left from those days but I still loath this guy. But he is in the mold of forwards we need until the youngsters are ready.

You bring up a good point with this last statement.

Everyone here's trying to acquire the perfect piece - we're trying to put together a team that has elite defense, elite goaltending, and elite offense.

But in the cap world, that's just not going to happen.

Every team has issues:

Pittsburgh - Great O, solid D, no grit and shaky goaltending.

Rangers - great D, goaltending, can't score.

Boston - solid D, great goalie, offense meh.

Caps - O's great, D-meh

Even Chicago - last 4 years - Cup, flameout, flameout, cup.

We could do this for everyone.

Nashville - Elite D, elite goalie - can't score, the farm's empty.

The idea that if we don't acquire the big time PPG 1st line forward than it's worthless even trying is silly, and ignores the reality of building a team in the NHL. We can debate if those guys are even available, but that's another topic.

Are guys like MacArther, Filppula, Clarkson, Stalberg the instant answer to all our problems? Nope. But you can't just throw your arms up and say "well, those guys won't score at a PPG clip, the season is shot, might as well bring on more Yip".

This is still a tournament sport. Once you get in it's all about who gets hot (2012 final had an 8 seed vs 6 seed), not who has the most PPG guys.

Also, and interesting note:

In 2012-13, in the eastern conference 8 of the 9 teams that gave up the least goals made the playoffs.

In the west, same thing - of the 9 best teams in goals against, 8 made the playoffs.

Flip that to goals for:

Only 6 of the highest scoring teams made the playoffs in the east, only 5 in the west.

You need a solid, effective offense to win - but not necessarily a scoring machine.

Fillpulla is a player I think can out perform his expectations. Think about it, he has great skill, but was behind Z and Datsyuk his whole career. I think we should go after him first IMO, we can be solid up the middle with that.

Poile made a comment on 104.5 just a bit ago that made me cringe. He said he hopes trade talks will heat up after the UFA signing day.

I hope this doesn't mean we plan to wait it out and hope a trade pops up...

Of course that's his plan, he's David Poile

From what I heard during the draft it's been a bee hive of activity on the trade market.

I understand the issue with procrastination, but I'm happy to hear this. Outside of Vinny, there's nobody on the UFA market that will really help us. Just decent pieces.

If we are not proactive in UFA we will end up with this lineup for the season at forward.

Wilson/Fisher/Honry
Forsberg/Legwand/Smith
Bourque/Spaling/Beck
Clune/Gaustad/Halischuk

Then if anyone gets injured we can bring back Rask!

Poile said he'd like to talk to Briere

People are bashing the UFA's were all mentioning but when you look at it, it's either 1 or 2 of those guys to see if it works or were in the same boat as last year. I don't think we'd be as bad but still worst 8.

I'm open to giving Filppula 5 per and trying him at #1, it's worth a shot. Also could see us talking to Penner and Raymond since Poile mentioned he wanted to get bigger. (Penner, not Raymond) of course. We need something new to shake the lineup. And with the Gill waiving that frees up a couple million more in the cap space

Just heard that on HockeyCentral myself. His value won't get any lower than it is so he'll definitely come cheap. In terms of commitment though, I'm thinking more along the lines of a one night stand. Do not want unless all other avenues have been explored.

Iginla would do well to do what Jagr did. Sign a one year deal with a team like Dallas with the understanding that a trade to a top team will occur at the trade deadline if necessary. In fact, let's sign Jagr.

Not opposed to that. Jagr just wants the chance to play in someone's top 6. Doesn't appear as though money is a real pressure point either. At worst, you get a 2nd/3rd round pick or middling prospect out of it. Would be nice to see this team have possession of the puck for more than 5 seconds.

id be thrilled to get jagr.... but never gonna happen .. next. the only realistic option i see is briere and he is more of a project with limited upside at this point in his career.
