The weber contract might soon be a blessing.. It goes down allot right around the time jones 2nd contract and kliens sweet heart deal are over. Yes we are paying weber allot but josi gets 4 mill Klien under 3 and jones elc... Now is the perfect time to pay upfront an get savings to help us later.

Weber Jones and Klein are all right handed defensemen. Ellis is the odd man out. Both he, and Gill, should be moved by the end of the offseason if Poile is managing his assets wisely.
Your right the Preds drafted Ellis in thr first round because he is just a specialist and to trade a few years later.
The hate on Ellis is ridiculous. Oh suddenly he is not big enough because he has not turned into Weber or Suter. He is still young give the kid a chance to improve and gain confidence. Those who are ready to trade him make me wonder if they have ever seen him play.
He isn't going anywhere and a lot of people are going to be eating their words.

I question his size because he obviously wore down this past season from the constant pounding, and I'm not the only one that noticed, why do you think he was sent down? That was a short season too.

It's not just that he's small, it's that he's small and not really fast enough to avoid the hits. He's going to have to really work on his upper body to be able to handle regular minutes in the NHL. Having said that, pairing him with the even slower, turnover prone Gill was also a trainwreck. Gill put Ellis in a bad position, often, and probably made him take even more of a pounding than he should had.

Ellis will be fine in my opinion. Does he need to get bigger? Yes of coarse and the same could be said for a lot of players. He will get bigger, faster, and better. Don't forget they had no training camp last year. So he has been through what 1 legit off season.
The Preds just hired a guy who was one of the best smaller offensive defensemen that has played in the NHL. This hire was not made without Ellis in mind. With that said not every player will we perfect and ideal in every aspect. Give the kid a damn chance. The Preds didn't draft him as high as they did by drawing a name out of a hat. I think the Preds staff know a thing or two about defensemen.

Agreed at times he showed great things last year.. We have the perfect coach for him to learn from now.. I expect next year we will be talking about what one to move to make room in the top 4

They do know defensemen for the most part. However, they've made a few blunders too.
Like Ryan Parent or even Jon Blum

The new coaching hire is with Ellis today as a matter of fact while this discussion is going on.

Look, this isn't rocket science. With Josi, Weber, Klein all locked up long term AND we have Seth Freaking Jones, we don't need Ellis. What we need is a good PK guy and a left handed D man who can handle the bottom pairing duty. Is Ekholm that second guy? maybe. I certainly think so. Is Bartley? Maybe. On the PP you are going to have Josi, Weber, Jones, and ultimately I think a forward.

We don't need Ellis. Good asset management and a little bit of brains dictates we trade him now for scoring help. We got Jones and Jones>Ellis. What's so hard to understand about this? We have the defense locked up now let's get some help upfront. Hell I would be OK if we got MPS for Ellis straight up at this point. Ellis' value has dipped and IMHO Poile trying to trade him to BOS last draft says a lot about Ellis and his value to the team. Right now he is more valuable as a trading chip than he is a player. That's just a fact.

With Yip Hals SK gone we need to replace them with quality pieces. Ellis will get us that.

I agree we don't need Ellis but I think we should hold on to him and let him play this year in an effort to increase his value.

Agreed. I'd rather take that risk than sell low. Young dmen typically don't bring in good returns until they break out and prove they can handle minutes. That, IMO, would be smart asset management.

If Poile can somehow get a great return then sure, go for it.

I think Ellis goes, but not yet. We should let him develop a bit more to increase his value, which can be done.

You move on and write it off as the cost of doing business. I'd rather take the risk than give up early on him.

If we can't get anything for Blum or Ellis that's two more first round picks that Poile blew. I am still mad we took Pickard over Eberle the year we took Wilson. Poile is a decent GM but he has had some major blunders the last few years. He and Trotz need to be on the hot seat this coming season.

I love how people can look back at mistakes in the draft when it's years later. Anyone can look at any draft and say, I wish we took that player instead of so and so. It's easy to do. For all the bellyaching that happens around here, he's found a lot of gems in later rounds so if he blows some first round picks now and again, he certainly has made up for it with his later round picks. Let's see, he picks a guy who's been nominated for two Norris trophies in the second round and a Vezina nominated goalie in either the 6th or 7th round, might have even been the 8th round. Yeah, he sucks at drafting.

And what has Eberle done in Edmonton to help his team make the playoffs? Since he's been there they've picked number 1 3 years in a row and picked 7th this year.

I've gone back and looked at drafts where I say, darn, I wish we could've landed that player. Funny thing is, there's no way to know if that player pans out playing for us. Yeah, we could've drafted any number of players over the years but we haven't and we've had a pretty competitive team over the years. It's not perfect but to lambast him for not being a good GM is ridiculous.

And to say Ellis is a bust is a bit of a stretch right now. We've brought in Housley to work with him and how could Ellis not learn from a Hall of Fame player? I don't know if you had the pleasure of watching Housley but I did and he was one of the three most dynamic players from the back end when I was growing up. The other two were Paul Coffey and Ray Bourque so that's pretty good company.

Drafting is a crap shoot. You take calculated risks and there are no guarantees. I would have to say Poile has hit more than miss when it comes to drafting players who make it to the NHL and are productive players.
