I wish he'd played in this most recent post-season the same way. But he couldn't even play well enough to cement a spot in the line-up.
He didn't produce offense because his offensive zone starts was 41%. As far as 2012-13, Russell got much better starting around mid-season after he fully recovered from the injury he sustained during the lockout. He spot was absolutely cemented in the lineup. He played every single game from late February until the trade deadline and was +7 and had a whopping 29 blocked shots during that time. Hitchcock had numerous quotes after the Bouwmeester and Leopold trades that the unfortunate side effect of the deals was was that Russell had to come out.

Quote:
But this past season he had a long stretch of poor play. He never really did regain his form from the prior season. Even before Leopold came, he had been a healthy scratch several times.
He had an uneven start to the season because of the injury, but again, he was not healthy scratched one time starting on Feb 28th.

I appreciate what Russell did, and I want him to succeed in his career. The Blues could do worse than to have him and Cole fight for the 7th spot. But I think the team views Leopold as that stable bottom pairing partner to help Cole continue developing. (Whether partner on the ice, or in practice. Polak/Leopold/Cole is the bottom group.)
Cole was drafted six years ago. The guy is either has the chops to make it at this point or he doesn't. The minutes and quality of competition will effect his play, not his partner. Are you saying that Cole is much more likely to succeed if he was playing with Leopold as opposed to Polak, who has 350 games under his belt and has a much better ability to recover relative to Leopold. That's a ridiculous reason to bring back Leopold and that's not even bringing up the financials.

Buffalo had this exact problem with him after they signed Error.
Leopold and Shattenkirk was our problem. I hated him on the PP as well.

Should of never traded Nikitin like I said since it went down. N64 got so much flak for like 2 games. Halak should of made saves and N64 got all the blame. I much rather see Cole next year anyway.

This post is in reply to the posters''BleedBlue247 and Hooligan2x- Leopold was a very good player for the Blues down the stretch last year. He is better defensively than Russell by far IMO.He and Jaybo are the main reasons the BLues even made the playoffs last year. They changed the whole character of the defense when they arrived here-

Nikitin would be in the same boat as Russell, not making our top 7.

Bouwmeester changed the foundation of the top 6 because they finally found a legit partner for Petro at even strength and were able to replace Shattenkirk with a better defensive defenseman on the PK.

Russell had rebounded well before the trade deadline and then Jackman and Shattenkirk would have been reunited at even strength. No pressing need at all for a 2nd LHD with JayBow on board.

It's unfortunate that the Bouwmeester game of chicken with Detroit, STL, and CGY came to a conclusion after Armstrong had already acquired Leopold thus not wasting a 2nd rounder on him.

Other than size and "leadership" Leopold brought nothing that Russell couldn't. Russell's puck management and defensive zone exits are no worse than Leopold, if not better. And if you didn't notice, our second pairing went to crap once Leopold got here. And he was a black hole on the power play. J-Bo had a far bigger impact on this team than Leopold did.

Thank you.

People get caught up by the fact that he can skate like the wind. But for being an offensive d-men he's absolutely terrible at putting up points.

He's not that great. 3rd-pairing guy at best. Probably a #7 on a true cup contender... But that won't stop some of our fans from freaking out.

Surprised they couldn't get a pick for a young dman RFA but teams have a lot of options this offseason. Why waive now, though? Maybe something locker-room related?
