Yeah, but that needs to be split six ways.

A team may have actually given up something for Ballard in a trade when teams had cap space. Everyone knew that cap problems were coming with Ballard and Luongo this season but Gillis stubbornly held onto his cards until his options ran out. Gillis should be fired immediately.
Did other GMs just learn about the cap going down now? If there's no interest in Ballard now for cap reasons, there wouldn't have been before either.

The thing about buying out/getting rid of Ballard in 2011 is that it would have gotten Gillis fired if it turned out that Ballard became a top pairing defensemen elsewhere.

Given how much Gillis gave up to acquire him, they absolutely had to make sure that he really did blow. I'm okay that they didn't get rid of Ballard then, but they sure as hell better buy him out now that there should be no doubt in anyones mind.

Any news if he has been placed on waivers for a buyout yet?

Also, why would you claim a guy off waivers when you can just have him get bought out and maybe get him for less afterwards a la Lecavalier?

The only reasons you would claim someone before a buyout is if you are betting that he will get more as a UFA, or you really want him and are willing to pay a premium. Neither case would apply to Ballard, his value has dropped dramatically since we acquired him.

See, AV wasn't all that mean to Ballard. Every other team won't even let him sit in their press box.

Or perhaps a team like Islanders which has troubles attracting fee agents, this way they are guaranteed to have that player.

There is another reason. You want his services, can afford him in your team payroll but don't think you can get his services if he was on the open market. In such a case you claim him from waivers.

edit: I see I was beaten to the punch.

Along those lines depending on what teams see on the buyout waiver wire you might see some guys claimed at that time.

Looks like he's gone:

#Canucks defenseman Keith Ballard's agent Ben Hankinson says he has been told by the team that they will buy his client's contract.
Quote:
News1130 Sports ‏@News1130Sports 2m
Hankinson says Ballard has a sense of relief and is excited to play elsewhere in the NHL.
Quote:
News1130 Sports ‏@News1130Sports 2m
Hankinson says Ballard liked Vancouver but it was never the right fit from day 1.
Quote:
News1130 Sports ‏@News1130Sports 2m
Hankinson says he is looking for a short term deal for Ballard and won't have problems finding teams interested.
I think the last 2 are close to spot on. Ballard will do well on a 1yr deal with a low cap hit and hopefully get top 4 minutes on a weaker team

not really, if Booth is on LTIR we have 5M to spend, if not only like 2-3M if Tanev signs for 1.25K and Schroeder and Weise for close to thier qualifiying offers.

sad to see him go. It was not a good fit, but I think that was only about 25% because of Ballards play. He played far better than he was treated.

I seriously doubt he won't get a contract offer (and play at least 40 games barring injury this upcoming season) after the buyout. AV is a solid coach but that doesn't mean he never makes mistakes (eg., Cam Barker gives us the best chance to win...)

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $59,802,778; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (19-man roster): $4,497,222

That is essentially our base line-up with 4.5mil to sign depth and upgrade throughout. With the cap going down, this just isn't a good year to "shake up" our roster unfortunately. We need to invest some money in a good #3C, possibly move Schroeder to wing, and then look for some late steals to add quality depth. Fortunately for us, other teams are in the same or worse situations as we are. There are a ton of teams out there that will be sacrificing depth, I like to think our roster is better prepared for it than most.

Ballard getting bought out just has me questioning the Luongo situation all the more. Rather than hijack this thread though, I'll post this there.

Good luck Ballard, looking forward to seeing you in MIN.

1. Don't really agree with moving Schroeder. Give him a chance at 3C. He can handle those minutes and played great with Jannik Hansen last year. I would prefer they sign a good 4C who can play 3rd line in a pinch if he needs to move up. In other words, Schroeder is your Kesler insurance, now sign some Schroeder insurance.

2. I think the depth guys are going to be less than $1M per signings, they might get one additional player.

3. I don't think there are many teams in worse positions than we're in... Except Philadelphia.
