He really wants to get away from Pierre.
He's looking to get paid. Apparently he wants 7.5 AAV?

This. He does realize he's Kris Letang, right? I'm not sure what's worse, that he turned it down, or that Pittsburgh is trying to add another big, >$5m contract (Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Fleury, Martin). If he did take that contract, they would have Paul Martin and Letang commanding $12m/season for at least the next 2 seasons. That seems like overpayment to me, and not exactly a shutdown first pairing.

Looking at capgeek, they have 7 players under contract for the 14-15 season, $42m tied up, not including Letang. At a cap of $64.3m, and with (potentially) ~$49m tied up in 8 players if you add a big Letang contract, they'd need to sign 12 players with $15.3m. I don't see how Letang gets that contract, and Pittsburgh doesn't make any moves to free cap space.

I hope the Penguins know that I will happily play defense for them at a fraction of the cost, and make just as many bad pinches as Letang will.

Evidence to support the Yzerplan to try a committee of cheap young goalies. At least until the season starts.

They letting him clear before buying him out?

I wouldn't mind picking him up in FA, but for cheap. He did get kind of a raw deal in Vancouver.

Idk how people are thinking Thomas is going to come back and be his stellar self again. He's 80 years old and hasn't seen NHL action in over a year.

Marty has been criminally underrated his whole career. Why should that stop now?

The 4 games he played at LW were clearly worthy of him being nominated as 2nd team all-star for that position

Vinik helps sponsor Maccabiah hockey tournament.

http://www.jpost.com/Sports/NHL-owne...nament-318817?

Quote:
The owners of six NHL teams have stepped to ensure that upcoming Maccabiah ice hockey tournaments will continue as planned.

Given the venue, a small Upper Galilee town close to the Israel-Lebanon border, and the hot, sun-drenched climate of July in the Middle East, Maccabiah ice hockey until a few months ago seemed a wildly unlikely proposition.

Happily, thanks to generous sponsor support to match the players’ enthusiasm, it’s definitely happening and the pucks are set to drop.

Teams from Canada, Russia, Israel, Ukraine and the USA signed up for Open and Junior (aged 16-18) tournaments over July 19-26 in Metulla, which boasts the country’s one-andonly full-sized rink, recently refurbished by the Games Organizing Committee, including equipment imported from Scandinavia.

Six NHL team owners each donated to assist participation: Daryl Katz (Edmonton Oilers); Henry Samueli (Anaheim Ducks); Ed Snider (Philadelphia Flyers); Larry Tanenbaum (Toronto Maple Leafs); Cliff Viner (Florida Panthers) and Jeff Vinik (Tampa Bay Lightning).

In addition, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Joe Cohen of Los Angeles also contributed to support the tournament.

Just caught up on that. Thanks.

Minny has signed Keith Ballard to a 2-year contract ($1.5m per). I wonder why Yzerman couldn't / wouldn't match that. Home team discount I guess.
