Schroader not getting a real opportunity until late in the season when they finally clued in he is a damn good player, He had youngish guys like hansen who is a third line checker play on the PP for awhile, even with the sedins.

And worst of all, if any rookie made a mistake he would bench him for the entire game, does not matter if it's the 1st or 3rd period.

(Hey and this is coming from a person who loves AV and what he brings, but coaching prospects? No way in hell)

There are about 10 articles on AV's faults with prospects.
He definitely held back Kesler, Edler, Burrows, Tanev, Hansen, and Raymond.

Same **** is said about Tortorella. It's not true.

Hodgson got pillow soft minutes because he was terrible on the ice except in the offensive zone, but he was clearly behind 2 other centers and wasn't suited to 3rd line minutes. He got all pissy.

Kassian isn't actually that good Canucks fans just think he got shafted

What I find funny about this, is when kassian had that amazing start, I remember lurking other teams forums (for fun), and I remember multiple people on this site saying they would DIE to have a player like kassian on their team.

I even remember responding with, you guys got nash.

they may have been asked not to play that way.

I think G and McD CAN be crease clearers Staal along with Falk and McIlrath as well.

They have the ability and frame to DO the job. But I think it may have been a coaching philosophy that asked them not to play that way.

I think that a part of that may have been the fact that we had a former center coaching our Defence.

You and I both know that when you are doing that job, you sometimes eliminate both the opposing forward and yourself from position when clearing the crease.

Torts was all about maintaining position in the defensive zone which is why the forwards never moved out to the point-men.

I do agree that these guys are not the meanest toughest SOB's to ever lace up a skate, but you don't have to be to be an effective crease clearer.

He was good at getting the fundamentals down for our defensemen. I wouldn't say he was terribly important for Staal or McDonagh, but he definitely didn't hurt MDZ and helped Stralman a lot.

Zero question that Gillis made Torts hire a guy like Gulutzan for the PP.

Funny how forums aren't a hivemind and not everybody thinks the same thing. I'd like a player LIKE Kassian as well- except not Kassian himself based on last year because he wasn't that good.

Kassian came into the 2013 season with a back injury. He suffered a back injury playing in the AHL during the lockout. Kassian later re-injured his back. Then he was sent to the AHL. Kassian was partying too much and management sent him to the AHL.

Just hoping Arniel is up in the box and doing more tactical work then actual hands-on coaching. I'm sure he'll be in skates during practice, but maybe less of a voice. Would love to have Newell Brown on the bench doing the actual work with the PP and such. Those two won a Memorial Cup together so maybe reuniting that chemistry will alter Arniel's doucheyness reputation a tad.

Well I got my answer - AV:

Quote:
“I also worked on hiring my first two assistants. I thought Scotty (Arniel) and Ulfie (Samuelsson) were the two best guys to bring on board this time. I’m still in the process of hiring a third guy. I should do that in the next couple of weeks.

“Scott is in charge of the power play, Ulf is in charge of penalty killing. We do that all together but those are the areas I want them to focus a little bit more on.”

Vigneault then described the duties of his yet-to-be-hired third assistant.

“An eye in the sky. He’ll help us out practice planning, help us out pre-scouting. He’ll definitely help us out everything we do on ice, improving players on an one-on-one basis. I’ve got a couple of ideas. Glen has shared a couple of ideas.”

Arniel is a bench coach. Was hoping it would be Brown instead. ****

Why have Arniel run a PP with the track record that Newell Brown has? I just dont get it. This franchise loves making odd decisions.

Arniel has a very good track record as an assistant working with special teams. Brown wouldn't be better or worse.

AV said they talked to many candidates, and he knows Newell probably the best out of all them.. so maybe that says something that he hasn't been hired. Just got to trust him and Slats on this one. They know all of these guys a lot more than any of us.

Arniel didn't ruin anyone. As much as I don't like the signing because it's based on AV's familiarity as opposed to an unbiased assessment of the coaches available for the position, this Arniel thing is being blown out of proportions same as everything Brooks says.

Who is going to be the 3rd assistant that AV was talking about?

I think Ulf will do wonders for this teams defense. Make them more physical in front of the net.

Arniel running the powerplay? How was his PP in CBJ?

29th and 24th in the league, both years featuring Rick Nash on the top unit. Some specialist. I guess they know something we dont
