My understanding is that the recapture penalties are based on the years for which the team benefited from the cap-circumventing contract. So for Carter the Flyers would be on the hook for zilch and for Richards something like a couple hundred thou. Basically nothing.

8 and 60 would be GREAT to lock up a guy like Roo for the duration of his prime.

Actually the Cap "savings" for Richards were so minuscule during his time here that there wouldn't be any penalty at all for him.

I'm thinking 6.75 to 7.25 per year.
This is honestly what I think. If he just wanted the money then he wouldn't have signed for so much under his value and so quickly on his last deal.

If you want to get a player to sign for a lower cap hit you front load the contract as much as possible. Giroux could take 10 mil for the first 3 years, 6 mil for 1 year, and 5 mil for 4 years. that's a cap hit of 7 mil per but when you account for the "Time value of money" (and econ term) and interest/dividends from investing the money, it would average out to 8 mil average or more. It would be a win-win scenario.

This is the EXACT reason that many contracts are front loaded (plus for older players it lets them retire early if they want and not leave money on the table).

The Flyers have the ability to do that and I'm sure they will. They just did it with Vinny's contract.

But I think your numbers are slightly off because of the 35% variance rule. Going from 10 to 6 would be a 40% variance. These numbers would get Giroux an eight year, $60 million deal. AAV of $7.5 million.

I was thought maybe a Letang type contract, Anything over 8 mil. is getting close Crosby money and he is no Crosby.

7.75 is too much, he has only had one season with more then a point per game average. then again we are paying 5.25 to a washed up bum Defence man

Could you imagine the hate on the main boards if the Flyers signed him to a a deal like 53 million over 8 years. It would be freaking hilarious. All the haters would be out in full force. Calling Giroux an ass and such.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun. Just ironing out a few wrinkles and it will be announced within a day or 2. Sources suggest closer to $8.3 per.

I suggested 8.25 AAV a few months ago and people mocked me--but I think this is just going to be the new reality when it comes to locking up young superstars.

No home town discount there. I can't say that I like it, but it's around what I expected if true.
