I wouldn't trade Pavs to make room for him. I'd use Grabo as a 3C.

Is Pavs really an F3--that's the finisher right? I always thought of him as more of an F2. Well at least I always thought of him as more of a playmaker than a shooter. I think he's got a great shot, it's just pretty damn slow compared to some other guys.

Do you think he would be a fit Couture or Pavelskis right wing?

I'd put him on Thornton's wing and move Burns back to D.

Grabo was one of the best centers we had in Toronto (not saying much I know) but I guess they didn't like his 5.5M cap hit. Way better than Bozak yet he was relegated to a shutdown role. Yes, he is capable of playing 3C he did it for us all season. His offence suffered as a result but what do you expect? If it were up to me I would have held onto him and utilized him better the upcoming season, I'm confident he would have done better.

Anyways, since he's an FA now he is fair game. I would love to see him on the Sharks. Having him onboard would really solidify the offensive depth. He's small but he always plays bigger than he is (or with Gutz if you prefer), he's a very tenacious guy. He plays his heart out every shift. I hope he tempers his expectations for his next contract. Make it happen DW!

Yup.

For the others, Pavs is best at F3. He can F2. The Sharks have had him switch roles a couple of times and he does take time to adjust between the two. He is more than adequate at both, but better at F3. He is among the top 30 F3s in the league. F3s do not have to be fast, F1s do. It is better if the F2 is medium to fast.

That lineup looks great. The only thing is one can never say for certain whether Havlat will be there. RW looks awfully thin without him.

I like it a lot. We could even still trade Boyle for a forward.

And I think F3's have to be the most defensively responsible on a line.

If there's truth in Hannan re-signing, that has to be a sure sign Burns will be a fwd. Without Havlat:

Burns - Thornton - Pavelski
Marleau - Couture - Hertl
Torres - Grabovski - Kennedy
Desjardins - Burish - Sheppard/Wingels
Wingels/Sheppard

Vlasic - Braun
Stuart - Boyle
Irwin - Demers
Hannan

Doug Wilson would have a pretty big bargaining chip: Offer him a 1 year "redeem" yourself contract, and promise a chance to play on Joe Thornton's wing.

Not many teams can offer top-line and PP minutes with a generational playmaker, and Grabovski gets the chance to accumulate some decent numbers and land a bigger, long-term contract next season.

I don't know if DW would be looking at Grabo as a long-term solution, but short-term, I don't think this option can be beat from either side's perspective.

As BW suggests, he'll get a "prove it" contract. Based on the others, it will be in the $2mil range so that his buyout money plus the contract will equal his previous salary or better it slightly. That is generally the tradition on buyout players unless they literally played themselves completely out of the lineup. And closer inspection reveals that it wasn't Grabo's play so much as his usage.

BW,
Grabo+JT would not be good. They are both F2's and it won't help the point totals of either; they steal points from each other. You want Grabo playing beside an F3, Marleau, Couture, Pavs. Any decent F3 would enhance his numbers.

My understanding is that you can bank cap space from LTIR so if havlat came back anytime before the start of the playoffs they would have to clear salary for those days. As it looks now once Kennedy and a backup goalie are signed the sharks will be right at the cap so I expect whoever they sign to be at the sub $1M mark if they expect Havlat back this year

You cannot bank cap space from LTIR.

I think he would be perfect with Marleau and Couture on the line. That line could go power-to-power or against top shut-down pairs. All 3 are good defensively, and Marleau and Couture are top-notch shooters. Grabo is good as F2 set-up from what little I remember of him in the past, and he's decently fast (a bit above average IIRR).

Marleau - Couture - Grabo
Burns - JT - Pavelski
Torres - Sheppard/Hertl - Kennedy
Sheppard / Burish - Desjardins - Wingels

But even at $2 mil they might have to move someone to make room, given that Kennedy still hasn't signed and is going to want $2 mil minimum.
