They knew what the cap was going to be in 2005 as well -- don't be naive.

What changed between 2005 and 2012 is the other two cap leagues won dramatic decreases in the players share, and the NHL used it as leverage to do the same.

This may sound dumb but people keep saying that Voracek moving to his line was why he played better at the end of the year because Voracek had a career year, I don't think that was the case. Voracek played better because Giroux makes everyone around him better and Giroux played better because he finally had a good linemate to set up.

To be fair the ENTIRE team struggled really badly the first few games, not just G. It's hard for a playmaker like G to put of a lot of points when the people he's setting up can't buy a goal.

Giroux looked horrible at the beginning of last year. I don't know what happened but i blame him for our slow start. I know hartnell got injured and briere was moved to his line but that is no excuse.

Voracek would have had a ppg year being cented by schenn, and schenn would have had 30 plus pts. The minute Voracek left his wing, schenn stopped producing.

Everyone looked horrible at the beginning of the year, Giroux and Voracek included. Bryz was out best player at the time...

I'm not taking anything away from how Voracek played last season, but I don't think Voracek was responsible for all of Giroux's success in the last part of the year. A lot of Voraceks goals were set up by Giroux, after all.

Ill say this Giroux's role was huge last year. I dont think a single player in the league had as much responsibility as he did last year. Faceoffs pk's pp first line duties .

I think last years success for Giroux was based off the PP and by geting help in voracek.

I personally think that going forward in order for us to be successful Voracek and Giroux have to be split up. They are by far our two best, and in all honest only two, playmakers. Id also take Giroux off the PK.

A year away from restricted free agency, Giroux has been in serious talks with the Flyers on a new contract that would be among the richest in franchise history and make him one of the league's highest-paid players.

Giroux is close to a deal on an eight-year contract extension worth more than $8 million annually, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reported Thursday.

Comcast SportsNet reported the proposed deal would be worth between $8.25 million and $8.41 million a year, which would make the total value of the contract between $66 million and $67.28 million.

A big salary brings big expectations and big PRESSURE ! Having said that I hope the lad relaxes and plays within himself.Sometimes pressure can cause a player to grip the stick a little too tight which KILLS soft hands and the scoring touch...

Voracek was easily the worst player in the league for a week or two. He was brutal. Then he was awesome.

Fifth highest cap hit, behind the big three and Perry.
Also, because we're gonna hear it a lot in the next few hours, Crosby's cap hit is only 425k higher than Giroux's.

Giroux really held them over a barrel for every last cent, money that would have gone on better teammates. I don't know why he felt he needed to beat Getzlafs number so badly.

I doubt Giroux's agent would've agreed to that.

The guy is worth it, and played well above all of his other contracts; he has earned this payday, without question.
