Guys complaining about the contract:

1. Welcome to free agency, to be honest I'm surprised he came that cheap.
2. Cap will go up, this should be a very tradable contract need be.
3. We have to get used to the idea that Edmonton isn't a top free agent destination, and we may need to pay to play.

Edit- Also being a 3rd pairing D-man on the bruins in nothing to scoff at. It's not like he's on Potter or Whitney's level.

I've been reading this about Ference his whole career. Hell, I said it about him when he was on Calgary.

At some point people will just have to admit that he is one. He won't produce a lot of offence and he's not big but he plays his position well.

Love this. Not a huge guy, but he can skate, likes to hit, won't back down and will back up the youth. All in all I'm pleased thus far with MacT.

Can't bold this enough. You can't build 100% of your team through drafting and if the Oilers want to add some players via signing they will have to overpay by a bit, like this.

I hope we can grab Coburn also, so Ference can solidify our third pairing. That would be a definite playoff calibre defense.

Unless Coburn comes here, I definitely see Ference and J. Schultz lining up together on the blue.

Term is too long, but he's a legit 2nd pairing dman on a Cup contender. Reading the Boston thread about him, it sounds like he'll be a great influence for guys like Schultz/Klefbom/Nurse.

Watching hockey is a lot of work. Each game is like 3 hours long. But if you let someone else watch the games and write some stuff down, then you can just read that and use your calculator for 10 minutes or so. That leaves 2hrs and 50 minutes to go online and OPINE about this stuff.

It's really just good time-management.

Good signing in terms of dollars although its 1 year too long.

Ferrence is a young 34 and he is still a top 4 dman. Moves the puck pretty well and plays tough. Plenty of experience as well.

I wouldn't expect any bargains today so the extra year is not all that surprising.

Pretty solid. We need to get better now instead of waiting for 18 year olds to hit their prime. The cap hit will mean nothing when the ceiling is back up to 75 million by the last year of the deal. One year too long but beggars can't be choosers at this point.

If he's good enough to be a 2nd pairing dman on a Cup contender, much less one of the best teams defensively in the NHL, he's good enough for us.

Term is too long. In a year or two, we might end up with a log jam in defense.. do we even have a strategy for that?

Using logic of some posters on this board:

-PATRICCCEE BERRGEROONY WOULD BE 4TH LINE C IN EDMONTON!
-ZDENKO CHAAARA WOULD BE ON THE BENCH WHEN WE'RE ON THE POWER PLAY!

Equally stupid statements as calling Ference a bottom pairing d-man.

Definately a 2nd pairing dman....the only concern I have with Ferrence is his durability.

If he can stay relatively injury free he makes this defence better.

he was the best dman available this year in the ufa market. He should have been overpaid by a lot but he signed a fair contract.

Definitely a win for the org.

Meh, I guess. Seems like a lot of term, but I suppose you need to pay that to get Free Agents. Where does he slot in? Did we really need another 4-5 left-shooting defenseman, especially one at the twilight of his career. I seem to recall MacT saying something about wanting players who still had good years ahead of them.

Bah, whatever. I guess we'll see. I've learned not to get my hopes up where this team is concerned. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised and he'll work out and not be another Belanger 2.0 failure signing.
