Ference "It feels pretty cool to be an Oiler... growing up there with my dad... I like teh situation there now... New coach, it's going to be good... I've never gone through free agency before... Interesting to say the least, going over the options with my wife... Edmonton jumps out on the page... Not only that, but but we have a situation where you have a ton of talent , lots of young guys, just means a little more and good to be there, pretty good time. Fortunate enough to play in a city that loves hockey.

On talking to MacT "I talked to them (Eakins and MacT) a lot, finally get to see where they're going. It's a good preview for them as well, what kind of guy you are. I think this new CBA is going to really show how you use that period - it really gave me an opportunity for them. Really excited to join up with them. Not leave anything to chance. [I want to] work extremely hard."

That's the way I feel. Now, just one more quality guy back there and it's a good day.

It's really just good time-management.
Go tell some posters on the board this because they think that Dubnyk's save percentage and Smyth's advanced stats means they weren't sub par last year.

Good signing, solid D , fitness freak so his age is not a concern right now, can be a good mentor for the kids and seems like a really good guy to have in the locker room.

Jebus, I'm cursed.

This is what I posted on Ference just last night on another thread:

Quote:
**** yeah. Ference is a pylon. Managed to make the Bruins look mortal almost any time he was on the ice. Clearest weak link stuff and a guy that you'd try to not have on the ice much. Hawks particularly were feasting chances with Ference on the ice.

Can't stand Ference. With my luck he's an Oiler tomorrow
sigh.

Against the Hawks Boston was seemingly trying to get through most shifts ference was out on the ice. He looked bad for a vet D. Not much surprise he's available. Even less that I wake up and find out he's an Oiler.

Time to take up basket weaving.

Good signing. Should shore up the D a bit, and Ference brings a lot of leadership and experience.

To long but you always overpay UFA's. Should be a good mentor for the young D. At least we missed out on seriously overpaying for Clarkson.

The term is tough to swallow but I like the player, he was on my list. Good job oil, I hope Ference has 3 good years in the tank. His experience will help the team

Relax. Chara looked bad against the Hawks for the last part of that series too. Real bad. It doesn't mean these are bad players, it's just the Hawks were that good.

I would still like to see EDM still get another top dman and then move N.Schultz.

I don't see how anybody could dislike this deal.
Very very solid 2nd pairing guy who brings tons of toughness, character and a winning attitude to the team. Who cares that the deal is a little long, we desperately needed a guy like this. Well done MacT.

Should bring a good attitude and at least a guy who knows what it's like to play the tough games and win. Should be a good guy to help with Petry, Schultz and Smid.

My only concern is his durability. It looks like he hasn't played a full season since 06.

Sure, but huge difference between Chara looking bad and Ference looking bad. With Chara you know he'll come around.

I'm not that sold that we're getting all that much with Ference with this contract. He's had a hard physical career, lots of mileage. How much is left?

We'll see I guess.

tbh I never liked this guy in Calgary. Probably prolonged feelings about that as well.

I don't think there's a player out there you'd enjoy signing, TBH.

He did get overpaid though; on term instead of $.

I'm not a fan of this signing, I think he's a 5/6 D this year and we're just swimming in those right now. We'll see I guess.

Hopefully that term is irrelevant in four years. We have sooooooo many defensemen who will be poised to step in around that time.

There are, I just thought it was funny that out of hundreds of candidates that could potentially be in the offing that one I despise is now an Oiler.

Again this was me stating this dislike specifically about Ference here just last night. I stated it about no other player.

Bad luck I guess.

I do believe Ference is a bit overrated but is obviously an upgrade for us right now - we are SO weak on D. However, when Ference is 38, we will ALL be cursing his name. Sorry buddy. Enjoy the next year or two where you will be loved by most.

Ference has always been No.5 guy who has had the benefit of playing on a championship caliber team. He will get exposed big time in E-town. That said, we needed a guy like him. 2-3 year contract under 3M per year would be a lot closer to fair value.

I like the player, and don't mind the dollars, but I don't think he's good enough to anchor a 2nd pairing, and the term is too long for my liking. I could see this being similar to Steve Staios after 2 years where everyone on HFOil wants him off the team.

But I like his attitude and feel like he could be a good player for us for the next year or two. I also wonder if this opens the door for a N.Schultz trade.
