Drafting, Developing, making smart trades (player evaluation) are all things way more important then cap space.

The Habs currently have 5M in cap space...they aren't a better team for it

WOW

Renaud Lavoie ‏@RenLavoieRDS 21s

Roberto Luongo is still looking at his options. We don't know yet if he'll accept to go back to Vancouver.

Trade 2 7ths for a 6th, then trade 2 6ths for a 5th, and so on until you get Crosby

even when trading you have to take cap space into account.

We cant start with Drewiske as a top 6. It cant be true.
Well thats the reason why Drewiske was resigned. In case of injuries.

As for a 4th line winger, I think they'll settle with a rookie until Gionta comes back.

I hear what you are saying, but overpaying because you have cap space available handcuffs you in the future. Think Briere, what if they gave him 5 a year instead of 4, well next year we will have 1 less million to work with.

Having no cap space but players that will be leaving/retiring, you can manage the cap that way, but to spend to the cap for no reason and have money tied up for no reason... ties your hands later on.

As good as he is might as well change our name to the Montreal Smurfs. Sign Nathan Gerbe and we're all set.

I won't disagree with you. Yet, you take a team like the Hawks who despite their Cup win had to remove some important pieces from their Cup run but were good enough to go back and win it again...Not every team can do that though. True that you could be to the max if you are stupid enough, wouldn't make the playoffs. But you also cannot rack the top 10 players in the league as you woudn't be able to pay them.

But I get the idea. And don't disagree. You still have to deal with the cap anyway.

Lou is one of those executives who has stayed on too long. He is singlehandely destroying the Devils. NJD would have been better off avoiding Kovalchuk and signing Parise.
