That's certainly not true of his play on the Flames. He was a legit top 4 guy on that team and it's not like the Flames had a bunch of Norris candidates on the backend.

He'll probably start to struggle with the minutes in year three or four but we should hopefully have guys to step up by then.

Like I mentioned in my last post, by the final year of his contract hopefully he'll be irrelevant by virtue of all the defensemen we have in the pipeline. Right now he fills a need.

Sometimes you just lose the fight, dude. Chara doesn't need to 'come around.' He just got bested by a better team at the end of a long, hard playoff. The same is true of most of the Bruins. The Hawks were just that good. It happens. Worrying that Ference was a pylon for a few games against what was clearly the best team in the league wouldn't even be that worrisome IF he was the only one.

Let's worry about Ference not being able to handle the Hawks in Game 6 once we're actually in the playoffs. Guys like Ference help you get into the playoffs and they help guide players who've never been there into winners, by playing smart, stable and hard on a regular basis, on and off the ice.

This is a low-risk move. He's making less than Nick Schultz! If it doesn't work, the team survives. Right now, this is one of the best of a very few options. The risk is low - Ference's contract is not gonna keep the Oilers from doing anything in the future. The rewards might be high.

Do not like the signing at all. Never pay for long term on anyone over 33 unless they are a superstar like Jagr.

As long as he's gritty and difficult to play against I'm cool with this.

Bruins fan - Good on MacT for going after Ference. This is a good building piece to have. He's a good guy.

Probably one year too long, and .5M too much $, but considering this is free agency, I like the deal. Great depth move by McT. He is a solid vet to have with the kids.

Which is a better signing?

Ference, 34, 3.25MM, 4 years
Scuderi, 34, 3.375MM, 4 years, limited NTC

Scuderi probably took a little less so he could fit under the cap in Pittsburgh

Term is a little long but oh well.

The guy played some serious ES minutes for the Bruins this past season. We need that. He's also a good guy in the locker room and has playoff experience. Of which we have none. He also makes us tougher to play against.

It's free agency, if we were expecting a perfect term and money. He's signed before he's 35, so chances are the last year or two years, we'll probably buy him out. Meh.

The key is we need a RHD puck moving to round out the D.

That's the key. We won't be stuck with his cap hit if he's really that bad at the end

We will. The new CBA does not allow to bury contracts in the minors, IIRC.

Ference played top four minutes in Boston, one of the best defensive teams in the league. If he can play those minutes there he most certainly can here.
