Sounds like both he and Boyd Gordon were highly sought after so MacT had to sweeten the pot a little.

I'm really happy for Ference. I wanted him to go to the Oilers, and he did, so that's good, and he's making a lot of money. He's going to be so good for that locker room and all the young guys are going to love having him around, this guy is the best teammate you could ever ask for, and he's a damn solid defenseman (especially in the playoffs). If there's a questionable hit, he's the FIRST one to come to a teammate's defense and stick up for them. He's a great hockey player and an even better person.

People in Boston are devastated that the Bruins let him walk, even if they knew it was likely coming and it was probably the right decision with the emergence of Krug and Bartkowski. I had tears in my eyes watching his exit interview when he said that Chiarelli told him he wasn't going to be able to keep him, so just know that that's the kind of guy you're getting here.

Ference doesn't sign in Edmonton if we offer him 2 years.

People need to understand that it is the players that are in the driver's seat when it comes to free agency. We needed a defenceman and there were only a couple available via free agency that really would have helped our team out. Other teams are in the same boat so why in the world would Ference sign for 2 years with us when I guarantee there would be another team out there offering 4 years.

We had a choice: Sign a guy for two more years than we want to fill a top 4 role or not sign anyone and hope we fill our needs via trade.

I'm really not concerned about Ference's last two years. Worst case scenario, we buy him out or he becomes a veteran #6 defenceman making too much money. His contract will not have an impact on us keeping our core together.

This guy was one of the original extreme fitness guys. He'll have the Gary Roberts career. Not concerned about the extra year

I bet there is no way he'd have signed with ANY team for less than 3 years.
you have to be real.
the market is what it is, not what we wish it was.

I believe it's a good solid signing. the team is instantly better, and the salary is fair, I think.
I'd say MacT hit a double on this one.

I was actually expecting Ference to be closer to $4M so that makes up for the additional money Gordon got.

I love this signing. Boston is my second fave team and Ference was one of my favorite Bruins. He is way underated and brings a lot to the table and never mind great leadership on and off the ice. He was a top 4 D in Boston and he makes the Oilers D better.

Im unsure about the signing.

Good thing the Oilers are paying a guy to work at GMing full time so I don't have to know anything.

Im confident in MacT's ability to hire defensemen.

Undersized dman but he has a big heart. He'll be great in the lockeroom to. Overpaid but teams always do to land ufa's, Edmonton is a great fit for him imo.

This. I have no idea what our defence will look like. We have a lot of people back there. Does Klefbom even fit?

Ference shoots left and last season was on the second pairing with Boychuck.

Good signing. Maybe would've preferred a 3-year-deal, but the 4th year must've been an important factor.

Sounds like a great teammate and a committed, consummate pro. I have concerns about the length considering his current age but hopefully his skating and skills will not degrade so quickly, given his alleged fitness. He is definitely one of those character pickups that MacT was signalling for.

Adding Ference is big, but he's really the only (good) NHLer that we added to the back end.

I'd have to disagree. J.Schultz and Smid would be on any NHL line up. However you are right below that we are pretty stacked with 6/7 pair demen. Still makes it hard to compete for a spot.

Great signing.

Not a whole lot of risk giving him 4 years.

No 35+ contracts, no cap hit recapture, etc.

If the last couple of years drop in price, then the 4 years doesn't seem as bad.
