If the Habs wanted a player to score goals and not worry about the defensive side why not just re-sign Ryder? At least you know he knows the system and works in it.
The thing is, Briere is probably the worst defensive forward in the league.
Because Ryder, just like all the other FAs in the market, would not sign for $4million/2 years. Briere is a nice target because of those numbers.
Is it really that hard to see that the contract they got Briere to sign really makes this deal just fine.

I don't get it. As of today, the difference between this year's roster and last year's is a Ryder for Briere swap, and more experience for our young players. Last year we finished 2nd in the conference, so why is it such a stretch to think this will still be a competitive team? Briere is an asset the organization just acquired for nothing more than $$$. I still fail to see how its a bad thing, as there's essentially no risk involved.
