As soon as Mezaros is healthy he's getting traded for a pick.

I agree and the roster will be pretty much set. If Laughton really wows people at camp he might force someone (Rinaldo or Hall) out but I think he most likely goes back to juniors.

I agree but some around here have no problem spending a nickle under that Pronger LTIR money before the season starts which would be stupid.

Gagne - Couturier - Read makes a ton of sense on paper. I hope Gagne can get some of his shooting touch back.

From some guys who know their stuff on HockeyBuzz...

Bonus overages and cap penalties on next year's cap.

Schenn has 2.35m in bonuses and Couturier has 450k. Using LTIR puts the Flyers over the cap spending at year end, so any bonuses obtained since they are already not cap compliant get added to next year's cap.

Homer says he hasn't talked to Gagne's agent in a while, and he made it sound like he won't be back.

"In a while" is open to interpretation: hours, days, weeks? I'd go with the most recent update since it seems as if the quote from the Daily News was issued through a conference call.

Holmgren sounds downbeat on Gagne return now ... citing cap space reasons.

I'll say it.

I'd rather have Laughton on a wing than Gagne back. I know Gagne is a hometown hero and all around swell guy, but he's not that good anymore and frankly, he's a huge injury liability over an 82 game season.

I'd be fine with even giving several of the AHL kids a shot to earn a roster slot as well before throwing 2 million dollars at Gagne.

I agree...leave a spot open for a camp surprise. WORST case...we but Talbot there and have McGinn Hall Rinaldo hit everything in sight

I love Gagne. He's my childhood hero.

That said, Laughton on Couturier's wing makes a ton of sense. He'd be about as defensively useful on the wing as Gagne since the wing naturally lessens the defensive burden, he would get top 9 NHL work with legitimate forwards as well as extensive PK work, he's far more physical than Gagne playing on my concerns that a Gags - Coots - Read line is a little too soft for my pallet as a shut-down line, and he's going to need work as a winger eventually considering the Lecavalier deal.

We could fit Gagne under 2.50m to have breathing room. So he must want more than that.

This leads me to speculate that a deal will get done should they move Meszaros or that they have no plan to move Meszaros.

Out of respect for Gagne, he shouldn't be asked to just wait around for the Flyers to make up their mind. He has a family to think about.

That means that Laughton, McGinn, Akeson, Talbot (promotionary), Flanagan, Raffl, and Straka are likely competing for the 9th forward.

Maybe Gags just wants too much and isn't willing to take too much of a pay cut from his last deal.

This is his last shot at a decent paying contract in the NHL. He's probably asking for at least 2.75 mil per year and a multi-year deal, which he's just not worth anymore. If he can get it from another team, all power to him.

The thing about gagne is that rarely are you going to find a 3rd liner that can play a 2 way game that can help develop a young center in Couturier and has significant goal scoring ability. He will be on the Pk and be a great locker room prescence.

He would be such a great addition to that 3rd line but i would not go out of my way to pay him what he wants. He still comes with great risks.

If Gagne can get more money elsewhere he should do that. If not, he'll need to wait till Mezaros is traded.

Plenty of UFA/RFA LW and D talent, Gags doesnt need to be resigned.

He's my childhood hero too!

I really liked what I saw from Gagne defensively last year. At the same time I agree with you that a Gagne-Couturier-Read line is a bit soft, but still few first lines would have the offensive and defensive upside that line would have imo.

I know his scoring numbers were down for Gagne last year but he puts a lot of shots on net and once he gets chemistry with a couple guys on a line the points will come in.

I agree. The Gagne fanboys need to relax. He isn't that important to this team. If not Laughton, than Mcginn, Raffl, whoever will do just fine. If Gagne stays unsigned until after we finally are able to trade Meszaros, than go after him.

His actual salary this year was only $2m...
