We don't have the pieces to make a huge trade like Ottawa just did.
I'm not a fan of adding Cullen at 3.5 million. I am a fan of using 3.5 million in dead space to improve our roster. Cullen isn't a great piece, but he is an okay piece. I do hope there are more moves as we have essentially remade the 2nd/4th line. I'm not looking for huge pieces, but a mid round draft pick, or a flip to get a better offensive forward would be nice and be of value to our franchise.

So 2.5 for Nystrom and 1.85 for Hendricks?

Mind boggling.

For one million more, we could've claimed Grabovski.

Like the player, but seems $1M per too much.

I don't think you can defend these signings. I'm done trying. I stand by my initial comments, but all four taken together is without a doubt a mistake. Unless we move several pieces for a bigger free agent or top 6, I will forever remain confused why we are dropping serious coin on bit players.

We've got more bottom 6 players then we have spots. We have to get rid of somebody.

Nystrom at that amount is the most puzzling deal of the day. I'll need to see the opening day roster to get a clue why Poile signed him at all ... Never mind for so much $$$$$$.

Nobody can claim Poile sat still.

Well, I guess my prediction after putting SK on waivers of us spending somewhere in the neighborhood of $3m from the cap ceiling came true

#Preds could ice a 4th line of Nystrom/Gaustad/Hendricks with almost $8M cap hit next season.

So Poile is doing the HF Boards approach. Spend a ton of money a quantity as opposed to spending the same amount of money on quality. We are overpaying for 4th liners. Stalberg's deal was actually decent comparatively. To pay Cullen, Hendricks and Nystrom this sort of money is insane. Why not take that money and overpay for a true top 6 player. I don't think anyone here would've cried or been pissed if we had spent $5-6 million on Ribiero, Weiss, Grabovski, Roy or any one of the true top 6 talents out there. To spend this sort of money on fringe NHL players is absurd. Maybe he wants to get fired and honestly, if I'm an owner, especially Bret Wilson, I'd be making a phone call firing this guy. So replace guys with the same guys but at a higher rate. Yeah, that makes sense.

Someone tell all the league's fourth line players to stop calling David Poile.

Today our team got deeper in the bottom six, and we turned into a club that can grind other teams down (or at least not be grinded down as easily by some teams). We did not necessarily get much better offensively unless Trotz is able to play his offensive guys on more favorable shifts with his plethora of grit.

Looks like as of right now we will be running with:

Forsberg Legwand Wilson
Stalberg Fisher Hornqvist
Beck Cullen Bourque
Hendricks Gaustad Nystrom

Extras: Smith, Spaling, Clune,

Weber - Josi
Klein - Jones
Ellis - Bartley

Rinne
Hellberg/Hutton

Meh. The defense looks good. Maybe the transition game combined with having the ability to let our top lines get heavy offensive zone starts while our bottom lines grind the opponents down will prove to be a smart move. I hope.

The thing I want to know is why sign guys like Hendricks and Nystrom so fast? Those are depth players that you fill out your roster with after you complete filling out more important positions (top 6 forwards, top 4 defense) or whatever the case may be.

Why are we signing them on the first day? Why are we signing them for 4 years? Why are we giving them $2-2.5 million per year?

Right now I have mixed feelings. Couple of good signings, a couple that seem high. I will reserve any real comment until next Jan, by then we should be able to tell if this was a good day or not. The team was soft last year and we have fixed that.
