Does this mean the Coburn talks have diminished? Maybe we can give them Petry+ for Coburn

Anyone doubting this signing will love it by mid-season. Ference is a class-act player who plays a lot bigger and more physical than his size would indicate. He's willing to drop the gloves, especially in defense of a teammate, he's a great skater, and he brings a lot of experience to the table.

Even though they weren't cheap, we badly need what both Ference and Gordon bring to the table.

Doubt it, this is his last contract, wouldn't be surprised to see him get fat and happy and edmonton having to buy him out after 2 years.

Huh?

Why would he get "fat and happy"??

I'll take that bet. He's actually a vegetarian, which makes it pretty tough to get fat, and was known for his commitment to physical fitness, particularly in the off season around Boston.

Should be interesting what happens with the D pairs.

I assume Smid-Petry, Ference-Schultz is a lock for the top4 unless Klefbom absolutely blows us away and steals Ference's spot.

Klefbom, Schultz, Belov, Potter, Larsen will be fighting for the #5/6 spots.

Belov and Klefbom have 0 NHL games between them and could very likely be in the AHL this year. Schultz is a lot more expendable than he was at 9:59am this morning, but it's not like we have a glut of LD who are better.

I'm confused with all this talk about moving N Schultz. All of a sudden we have a reasonable group of dmen, and we are supposed to move one? Makes little sense to me, we need the depth. Our defense seem to have a hard time staying healthy...

Reading through the Bruins thread on him, seems like the character is pretty outstanding. Nice to get more of this element to the dressing room, should be invaluable.

Smid-Petry
Ference-Justin
Klefbom/Nick-Belov/Nick

Larsen and Potter to OKC(if they get through waivers). Would make a lot of sense. Pretty much every D prospect going to OKC shoots left and Potter/Larsen are righties.

Marincin-Potter
Davidson-Larsen
Musil-Fedun
Gernat

This thread is full of posters who I never see on HFOil, posting that they don't like the signing.

I hang around.

Thats fine if you like it, but, a 5'10 defensive defenseman, he's 35 at the end of the year, when all defensive dmen historically fall of a cliff. It's not like even if you like the signing you can't possibly see anything wrong with it. Theres plenty of risks involved, fortunately once the new tv money comes in we can buy him out or waive him and the cap will be so high it wont matter.

I said added. As in this year. We've gone from having a surplus of 7/8 defensemen to having a surplus of 6/7 defensemen. Woot!

His size doesn't concern me. He has always been a tough player.

I really like the experience he brings.

But yeah, continue worrying about buying him out in a few years. God forbid the Oilers acquire a veteran with extensive playoff experience to play on the blue line.

yeah I'm noticing this too. Most of the people in this thread against the signing are people that I haven't seen before here. I think the term's a little long but the guy won a cup and was 2 games away from another, it's good to get some of that experience in our young D core.

Bruin's fan here. Andy Ference was a favorite of mine. I have ST next to the B's bench and he is a great leader on the team. He stands up for fellow players ...always.

Many B's fans are very sad to see him go.

Andy does much for the community and seems like a great guy. Boston lost a good one

Best of luck !

when he was 25 it probably wasn't an issue, when he's 35 and his physical skills arent as great you will notice he's 5'10

The B's fans are tough on players but feel free to go to the B's board and you will see how many there are sad to see Andy go.

His leadership will be missed. He is loved in the city of Boston too for all he does.

Some will always like him for flipping off the Hab's fans. We in Boston all want to do that

Watching this video, he is the perfect fit for the Oilers for the next few years. For this type of player, extra years are a very minor price to pay.
