Hall will probably be the next C. But I think Eberle is more what I envision as being an Oilers captian.

It's actually crazy to think that Smyth has never been captain of the Oilers. I'm not saying he's in a good position right now to take the C, but it's just a weird set of circumstances that resulted in it never being him.

It's kind of weird giving a letter to the new guy, but Ference could be a serious candidate, imo.

Sounds like the guy oozes character and leadership.

The best fit for Captain is Sam Gagner. When he was drafted the word was that he had captain written all over him as he was one willing to do whatever it took to help the team win and he sets a great example of doing it all. Now he just has to be signed! Hall may be the best player but that doesn't mean he is the best captain material. Messier took time to grow into becoming the captain too. A's would go to Hall, Ebs and Ferrence.

Does anyone else have any love for Andrew Ference to get a letter?

Cup winner
Hard nose vet
Well spoken
Signed long term
Outside voice (he knows what a locker room of a winner is like)
Letter wearer on a top team in league

I'm not saying give him the C, but he has to get a letter.

If Eakins picks the captain, I bet he gets it.
If the team picks the captain, Hall gets it.

Pretty sure I voted Hall but I'm leaning towards Smid as well. Why pile on any more pressure on Hall at this point? Hall, Ference and Eberle as assistants.

there was a time when Jason Smith was injured for an extended period of time where they did give Smyth the C was there not?

Edit: cant find a picture, but im almost sure he wore the C for awhile

I still don't think Hall wants to be captain. The media asked him several times last season whether he felt more comfortable being vocal in the locker room (now that he's the de facto best player on the team) and he always said that that's not the kind of guy he is. While it's great if your captain leads by example on the ice, I could see Eakins going with someone who guys look to a bit more off the ice.

I can't find the exact date the Oilers named Jason Smith as captain, but memory seems to me that they didn't name him until after the 2001-2002 preseason had ended but before the regular season. I went to a couple of preseason games that year and remember that Smyth wore the C for one of them, which had me thinking that he'd be named the permanent captain.

I wouldn't mind it being Ference if Hall doesn't want it yet, but he should understand that some day it will passed on to one of the kids.

You're right. I remember because I really wanted Smyth to captain the team and the C suited him very well. I'm struggling to find a picture, but I remember this. Probably around 2002 or 2003.

edit: Did some searching on google, only really found discussions from this very board around 2002/2003 speculating whether Smyth would wear the C with Smith out. I'm positive he wore the C for a few games, but I'm starting to doubt my memory.

I'd say give it to Hall too, but I'm not sure that he wants to be captain. Last thing we need is to have one of our best players distracted or frustrated by the responsibilities of the C while he's still trying to carve out his game. I hope Hall is an Oiler forever so there's still time for him to wear the C further down the line. Of course if he wants it now that's probably the way to go.

I think it should be Smid. I would be surprised if he isn't one of the best liked guys on the team, and its a given that he would do anything for the team. I think wearing the C would even take his game up a notch. He's also been a guy who has survived the absolute worst of this team and never been negative or shown any sign of "giving up" or bailing on plays because he's on a last place team losing 4-1 in the third ... again. Many players would have left for greener pastures, but Laddy signs quickly, happily and cheaply in Edmonton every time. Never got sour about the fact that the Oilers tried to trade him for Heatley either .

The only thing I don't like about Smid is that he could be found on his knees in the crease far too often last season. Hopefully that was just a symptom of having no confidence in his goaltender (understandable) rather than an indication of the direction he's taking his game.
