Really like this move.

Logic like this is why we have consistently had 3rd/4th lines that don't score...And now that we have someone on those lines who can the new complaint is that he scores too much and isn't physical enough (the opposite of what we have had)

We are upgrading the bottom 6, EXACTLY what we needed to do.

Low risk, HIGH reward.
You better look at Pouliot's stats before penciling him in for 50 points--he's never even gotten to 35 points in the NHL.

At 26 years old, what you see is what you get. It doesn't matter that he was drafted in the 1st round, it doesn't matter that he was drafted in the top 5. But, it's a decent signing--should give the team a little more depth and a little more scoring ability from the 3rd line.

I'll always remember this guy for turning over the puck in the neutral zone on a failed dump attempt in game 7 OT against the Caps last year which directly led to the Joel Ward goal that eliminated the Bruins.

This is the perfect signing as far as our kids go. Pouliot is good enough to hold the fort for a year and let the prospects get big minutes in Hartford. And if one of them forces their way up to the team and sticks, he's not a guy that's going to block them.

Nice signing. Pouliot is good 2way player. Really came into his own the 1 year in Boston, seemed to finally realize what kind of player he is and what was expected of him in a 3rd line role. I was surprised they traded him to TB. Real good skill just could never produce consistently to stick in the top 6 and live up yo his high draft position. He is a great 3rd liner who can play in the top 6 in a pinch.

What do you expect for 1.3 mil on a 1 year deal? He's 26 years old. He'll be more productive than Powe or Asham. It's extremely low risk.

Yes, we need more size and toughness. But we also need more offense. If you can't find both in one player, then you have to settle for one or the other.

When did I say that "he scores too much?"

I guess if we put him with some physical bruisers who are good defensively, I could see it working.

The problem with the bottom 6, for years now, hasn't just been that they don't score; it's also that they don't scare a two-year old when they're out there.

You didn't - directly. You just implied you'd prefer someone more physical/defensive minded than a decent offensive player. And to get someone who scores 35ish pts similar to Pouliot while also doing those things apparently now costs 7 years and 36 million dollars (at least according to Toronto).

Well, that's why you have to develop your own bottom 6 instead of constantly relying on FA. Like Chicago with Shaw, Bickell, Kruger, Saad (for the playoffs anyway). And I think Toronto's expecting more than 35 points from Clarkson, I just don't think they'll get much more than that.

I'd want someone more physical/defensive minded for the bottom 6, right. But that's not to say that I want an offensive black hole like Powe. Have to find balance.

For reference in regards to offensive ability:

Last 3 years average for Pouliot are 16-19-35 and ~12mins/game (sh% range from 10-15)
Last 3 years average for Clarkson are 22-12-34 and ~15.5 mins/game (sh% range from 6-13)

So they are comparable offensively - Pouliots production is actually better. So I guess Clarksons defense/hitting/PK'ing are worth 4M+ more then?

Toronto probably is expecting more than 35 pts from Clarkson but tbh expecting more than that is pretty unreasonable. That's what he is. I suppose play him with Kessel and sure he'll get more points but thats just based on playing more with more skilled guys rather than skill (as in anyone can play there and improve their numbers)

Poster *****es about Pouliot's lack of toughness, then posts videos of Pouliot winning fights. Only on HF?

Horcoff is the only one that wasn't really anything.

Kinda baffled by this one. Trade has to be coming to free up space.

Hell no, at least in my mind.

People just fell in love with Clarktard's one good season and have been drinking the kool-aid ever since. Almost 0 hockey IQ as well, and doesn't really defend all that well.

I guess, looking at all the crap contracts given out today (Nystrom at $10/4 is one of the worst), this is actually a decent signing by Sather. But I'd rather have a player like Clarkson in the bottom 6 than Pouliot. But obviously not for that $.

Agree completely. But given those players are extremely expensive and always overpaid I'd highly prefer a player like Pouliot than someone like Powe/Rupp/Asham etc..

Cooke's a good player. I'd definitely have taken him. And he doesn't really take many penalties anymore (36 mins this year, 48 last year)

A player in his style (obviously excluding all the cheapshots) would fit in quite nicely, if we were able to draft one of our own.

Which is why the Rangers have to figure out how to develop their own guys in this mold. Maybe Yogan, one day.

I'd prefer Pouliot rather than Powe/Rupp/Asham too, but I'd prefer players like Clutterbuck, Bickell, etc. over Pouliot, even if those players scored less than him.

Another good depth move.

I feel like since the Brassard trade Gorton is running the show and theres more evidence in their moves that they have a concise plan and i like it. Good depth for the lower lines and has some skill especially for the first few months when cally and hags are out and some younger blood will be injected into the lineup. I could see a trade brewing as well, but another great 1 year deal. Upgrades on both powe and asham, very good, under the radar day for Rangers.
