Considering they could have picked him up for nothing 2 days ago, good job Armstrong.

I'll take a 5th rounder over just losing him on waivers. Wish him the best of luck, the numbers game just wasn't in his favor.

Seriously. That makes little sense from Calgary's perspective.

They also signed him to a one year deal worth $1.5 million.

Armstrong just flat our preferred Leopold over Russell. Fair enough.

Well... we traded Nikitin (5th round pick) for Russel, so at least we earned an equal return.

Also, to explain the Calgary side of things, it was to protect their waiver priority (or at least that's the only logical explanation. No one can really tell what Feaster is thinking at any given time).

Anyway, Im happy with this deal, though I think we could have traded him for more if he had not just been placed on waivers

I'll buy that explanation. Otherwise it looks like one more Feaster blunder (not simply claiming him for free).

I wish Kris luck in Calgary.

Why didn't they just claim him?

I don't see any players they'll want going through Waivers at this point. A majority of movement has been done to work with the buyouts and whatnot.

I don't know why they didn't claim him but hey, 5th > nothing

Sad to see him go, he played some good hockey here but sadly, there wasn't room for him to stay

Feester said on the radio that they did not want to pick a player up who was arbitration eligible so they worked out a sign and trade deal to protect their spending.

Solid deal for Calgary. Russell isn't the end all be all, but he's a good bottom pairing d-man who can transition the puck real well. Best of luck Russell!

I don't know what to think about this except it's really no big deal.

So much for putting Russell at wing on the 4th line. (Thank goodness.)
