I agree, unless we get other D through trade.

This does seem to seal the tank up though.

Sticking on the premise of L-R, 1 of Weber,Sulzer or McNabb will be our top-4.

I agree. I'm not surprised they signed him for this reason.

Plus I said it before, the Sabres would want a veteran defenseman as the 7th. You don't want your rookie D developing sitting in the press box.

That seems like a possibility. Another could be switching McBain and Pysyk.

Seems reasonable. A couple injuries moves Ruhwedel into NHL action at some point, and Risto starts in Rochester (which is fine since I don't recall many 18-year-old defenseman jumping to the NHL...)

Ristolainen will turn 19 two weeks into the season and last time we put out a 19 year old dman we won the division

Yep. Pysyk and McNabb were paired together at the end of last season in Rochester.

Well then we are certain to win the division if we play Ristoleinen based on your understanding of correlation as evidenced by you "top 3 picks since 1988" mantra.

Thanks for clearing that up for everyone.

Nothing wrong with the tank action. But I think they're set up pretty well overall with Ristolainen, McCabe and Ruhwedel possibly in Rochester. Good depth. Obviously the key is that the young players take a step forward.

Its a good minor signing imo. Ego-less vet to compete with the youngsters and make them earn their spot instead of just handing it to them because we have no other option. Competition breeds effort.

This is a good thing

Ehrhoff, myers, weber are locks

The other 4-5 spots is open competition
Bang on.

Thats why I like this signing.

He earns a spot, fine. He's an injury call-up playing in Rochester, fine.

This means nobody is handed a spot. A change from years past. The competition to make the team come training camp and pre-season will be exciting.

I'm fine with the signing. I'm not nearly as down on Sulzer as Chain and others are, despite Sulzer's apparent no-contact policy.

I also see the starting 7 as one of the two above scenarios.

Ray Borque

Adding in the others, (McCabe, Ruhwedel, Risto, etc.) and this D-depth, despite inexperience, is definitely more balanced in terms of handedness.

Benefit (and, to the pessimist, a curse) of the D, as it sits now, and I'm not anticipating trades, is, aside from Ehrhoff, everyone else falls in one or more categories of either youthful inexperience, incomplete game / talent, or reclamation. They can be mixed and matched up and down the pairs or swapped in and out with injuries, without a very clear designation as to who is in fact the "fill-in". That may mean less pressure on them, and a chance for the unit to grow together.

Of course, they'll still probably give up 260-280 GA, perhaps more if Miller is moved.

Any D-man signing would've been a vet LHD that nobody would be impressed by. Sulzer happens to be that type, and the team knows exactly what they're getting in him. To me, this signing means R/R want to be patient or safe about Ristolainen and McNabb. They don't want to "gift" them a roster spot or force them into action if they're not ready. If one of Risto/McNabb/Ruhwedel have that strong of a camp, then there are the options to carry eight D-men or trade (preferably) McBain or Sulzer to a team that lost a D-man to injury during camp. My best guess at pairings would be...

Ehrhoff-Myers
Weber-Pysyk
McNabb-McBain
Sulzer-Ruhwedel/Ristolainen (filling in up the chart according to L/R)

Having four of those guys that can be sent back and forth to Rochester is a good thing, providing plenty of flexibility depending on injuries and who needs to be a healthy scratch.

He is what he is--experienced, decent skater with size experience and the occasional brain fart. If he were consistent he would be highly sought....

I'm actually happy they signed him. He played what about 20 games or so with buffalo. He seemed to have produced goals. Something I dont dismiss. Doesn't make it he gets sent down to Rochester.

I could see Pardy get signed on a 2 way contract similar to Ellis.
