If you look at cap geek, you'll see an overage penalty of 182k or so. That's from the bonuses. You are allowed to not count bonuses (cushion) against the cap, but if you spend to the limit (or over as LTIR causes usually) every bonus they actually meet will incur a penalty. Hence why we are in the hole this year.

I don't necessarily want Gagne back, but I don't think his injury risk is any more of a wild card than trusting a top 9 winger spot to one of the unproven farm hands you mentioned.

Ok with it all so far, was just as I suspected... My next question then (sorry ) is how do waivers work in the offseason?

From what I read they stop a few days after a teams season ends and begin 12 days before the season starts - so we can put anyone in the AHL now who's not injured? So why not just dump Mesz in the AHL if we couldn't deal him for more cap room (just as an example, not saying we should), is it because it only knocks of $900,000 off a contract? Or am I just all wrong about waivers?

I think he's the fall back plan if a trade doesn't happen then Gags will be back. I still believe they're trying to move Coburn. Way too much smoke. If it doesn't happen, then Gags is our man.

That wouldn't be the worst thing. Gagne doesn't make or break this team.

Well I was getting all giddy of the possibility of Alfie leaving Ottawa & the fans freaking out. I have to say after reading stuff on the main boards & twitter the Ottawa fans hit this one out of the park, comedic gold all around.

I think hes taking 1 shot at cup and next year retire a Sen...imo

Gagne I like, and I just think it would be a shame if he doesn't sign here. I do realize its not a make or break thing. Just a sentimental one.

If this is true, I would think there are a couple better options than the Red Wings. The Red Wings will be good and all this season, but one would think there are other teams that are more likely if you were handicapping teams. Obviously Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, etc

So you think it was just for a big payday?

Ryder for 3.5mm was a good signing by the devils.

I don't know what to think. It's one of the more bizarre moves in recent history. In my view, the Sens and Red Wings have roughly the same tier 3 chance at a cup.

Honestly, it almost sounds like a mid-life crisis move. Like buying a harley.

Value of Pietrangelo

Sean Couturier
Wayne Simmonds
2 1sts

That would be absolutely horrible.

Ouch. That's a lot for a guy you're still going to have to sign to an insane contract. A lot of the offers around here for Pietro have been too light, I think this one might be too much.

He would have to sign a contract before he is traded but, a right handed defender only 23, who isn't soft, and isn't even in his prime yet is worth it. 10 years of Pietrangelo on your back end would be awesome

I am sure many of the comments are out of anger. I dont blame em for being ticked off. There isnt a single person here who would react well if it was Allfy leaving us after 19 years.

That's a lot and probably what it would take to acquire him. I'd need to actually think about it.

I will say there's quite a difference between Mez and Coburn though. Coburn holds actual player value versus the lower value of an injury prone Mez. I would think that if you included Coburn, you could reasonably think that one of the 1sts would become a 2nd.

No, I don't think so. That trade makes the team worse overall. Giving up the firsts makes it more difficult to breed cheap talent too, which we'll be needing to fill holes one Pietrangelo gets paid.

My best offer for pietrangelo is

One of B. Schenn/Couturier

One of Read/Coburn/Laughton

One of
Cousins/Gostisbehere

2014, 2015 firsts

Laughton slots in for Coots
Dump Meszaros to get another winger

What winger is available for Simmonds who matches him?

Laughton doesn't come close to replacing Couturier, either.

I take the good with the bad, slotting Pietrangelo as your number 1 defender for 10 years is worth it.

Is it worth setting the team back something like 3-4 seasons while they try to reload?

The Flyers are built fine now. They have been building a core steadily for a bit now. It's time to stick with it and build around it instead of nuking it yet again. We'll be fine without him.
