Hopefully Gagner uses Bozak's signing as a reference.

Just pay him slightly more than Bozak at whatever term he's looking for. I could live with having him at 4.5 per.

Oiy
That's assuming he replicates his offensive production from this shortened season. The 40 point Gagner is not worth 4M, much less 6M a year on a multi-year deal.

UFA Bozak?

If Gags wants to sign long-term as a RFA he's going to have to take a little less.

Gagner is also 4 years younger than Bozak.

Exactly.

I'm curious if Gags is more concerned with dollars or term. 4.5x8 is more palatable than 5x4 imo

I'd guess the issue that's holding up the contract is term, not dollars.

Gagner probably wants a nice, long 5/6/7 year deal. I doubt MacT feels comfortable with a contract that long. He's probably hoping for something more along the lines of 3 years.

Anyone else sensing something significant to happen to Gagner over the next week?
There were reports like a week or so ago that they were close to an agreement. Alarm bells are starting to ring that still nothing has happened and usually when they report like that it means the extension is signed over the next 48 hours.

Did you really mean that?

There is no way an eight year term is acceptable.

Nope. This is all part of the process. It could be done tomorrow or could carry on into the season. It's all on MacT's timetable.

I'd only do 8 if it was at 4-4.2 without a NTC or NMC

That contract would only take him until he's 31. It's all about caphit in today's game. Gagner at 4-4.5 million is an easy contract to move

i dont think the oilers want to lock gagner that long, seems like Mact while publicly has saying he wants gagner here, his delay seems to think otherwise, with all the ufa signings in the 5 years 25 mill range, unfortunatly that is probably what gagner is worth on the market. wonder if mact just wants to resign him one more year for like 5 and try to trade him during season , or he is working on a trade now, as mact wanted more beef on his first 2 lines.

I was thinking Gagner and Hemsky could well go in a package.

I don't see how 4.5x4 isn't the perfect deal for both parties. With the Bozak deal as a reference point, and the fact Sam could still become a UFA at age 27 (making him prime for a 7 yr, big money contract), 4 years of playing with premier line mates (at least one of Hall/Yak/Ebs) should allow him to establish what type of player he is. And at 4.5 he is a very tradeable player if an upgrade presents itself.

What we can't do is cave in to NTC/NMC requests.

I doubt term is the issue. MacT has already said he wants to lock up Gagner long term. I suspect it's more dollars, particularly if the contract is going to cover all of Gagner's prime years.

6 years 4.75 with limited NMC, only good for 1rst 3 years of contract?

Seems to me that gives him some stability for a couple of years and gives the Oil flexibility in 3 years. Because of the NMC lower cap hit than would be justifiable given the 6 year term

5 years/4.75 is my prediction, the Oiler's won't sign him to short term deal because he becomes a UFA next year.

Different position/contract status/age, but does Gagner really think he deserves the same contract Ryan McDonagh just got(6 years, $4.7M per)?

Given Bozak, and McDonagh, I think Gags should settle for 4.5 ish over 5-6 years. If he wants more than that, well...... I guess he can go to arb and leave next year via UFA.

I cant see MacT ever signing a contract that allows thew player to be a UFA at 27. Gagner should have to give up at least 1 year of UFA status...I would bet we are going to see at least a 5 year term here if not more.

Gagner would be giving up three UFA years if he signed a 4 year deal.

Next season is Gagner's last RFA season.

Because he's been playing since 18, his RFA status will end based on playing 7 years pro rather than hitting 27.
